Yuk Shui Lou, 88, was the oldest daughter of Game and Mee Cow Wong. She was born on April 5, 1928 in Canton, China.  She had a very challenging life, as she grew up during World War II.  She was only able to attend school through junior high school because of the war.

In 1949, she met her future husband Tin King Lou, Sr. through a matchmaker. In 1950, the couple returned to rural Lula, Mississippi to operate the family's grocery store. She had eight children. In 1962, the couple moved the family to Houston, Texas to give their children a better life. They owned and operated King's Food Market on Cavalcade Street in east Houston for over 40 years. At an early age the children worked with her in the store to learn the business. She encouraged the children to attend college to avoid the hardships of the grocer's life. Yuk was very proud of her children for completing college and having careers in pharmacy, accounting, and information technology.

As an avid gardener, she grew beautiful flowers and many varieties of Chinese vegetables. She enjoyed her garden walks to discover birds, blooms, and butterflies throughout the year.  She would harvest Chinese vegetables to make delicious home cooked meals and share the abundance with friends, too.  As an expert seamstress, she sewed all her children's clothes. She enjoyed reading Chinese newspapers to keep up with all the current news.  Her mornings were spent sitting at the breakfast table as she watched backyard birds, especially her favorites, cardinals and blue jays. She was an excellent Chinese cook, who preferred to make delicious home cooked meals for her family and friends. Her favorite foods included fresh vegetables, hog head cheese, turkey legs, crispy roasted pork, fried chicken, braised chicken feet, beef tendon, and crisp snacks.  Her favorite musical artist was Luciano Pavarotti, and she enjoyed watching I Love Lucy and John Wayne cowboy movies.

Yuk survived many life challenges brought on by war, economic hardships, loss of family and declining health. She remained strong and was determined to be supportive in any way possible for the success of the family.  She shared with the family her belief in sacrifice, hard work, education, and fairness to achieve goals.  Her willingness to try anything opened doors to travel, culture, and new friendships. She always had a smile for everyone.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Mon Git Wong and Leonard Wong; and sons, William and Robert.  She is survived by her sister Yuk Yip Guan of Edmonton, Canada, son T. King Lou, Jr. and wife Joyce, and daughters Rose, Dorothy and husband Martin Chin, Mary and husband Phoy Ken Cheang, Mamie, and Barbara.  She is also survived by her grandchildren: Karen Lou, Kelley Lou, Donald Chin, Sean Cheang, and Alicia Cheang and husband Tim Hou.
