Wynema Viola "Nema" Miller (Consford) of Tomball, Texas died in her home surrounded by her family on February 20, 2017 following a short illness. She was 99 years old.

Nema is survived by sister Verda "Tody" Ballow, brother Howard "Ray" Consford, son James O. Miller, grandsons James Ted and Mark Lee Miller, granddaughters-in-law Maggie Moes-Miller and Stefanie Spinks, great-granddaughters Ylaine Miller, Caitlin Miller, and Rebecca Eubank, numerous nieces and nephews, and their families.

She is predeceased in death by: husband James Irby Miller, her parents, sisters Ruby Lee Haray, Maggie Beatrice Consford, Daisy Maxine "Mac" Counts, Grace Roberta Bates, Ruella Malcome "Rudy" Joines, brothers John Power Consford, William "Paul" Consford, Thomas "Boyce" Consford, Ishmel Worth "Slick" Consford, S.J. Consford, daughter-in-law Patricia Anne Miller.

Nema was born on January 02, 1918 to Stonewall Jackson and Ella Evalina Consford (Power) at their rural homestead in Ironosa, San Augustine County, Texas. She was the sixth of thirteen children born to the couple. In addition to her daily chores, Nema spent hours playing with her brothers and sisters, as well as taking care of the babies. A child of the Great Depression, the family called several small rural communities home, but the place she often spoke of the most, was the time the family lived in Wharton, TX in a beautiful house in the center of town across from the courthouse. She was educated at the local school until the 9th grade, when she left school to remain at her mother's bedside throughout a long illness. Later, after her mother recovered, she attended John Tarleton State Occupational College.

While serving as a volunteer for the USO, Nema met James Irby Miller at a USO dance. A short time later they were married in a ceremony in Trinity County, Texas on March 20, 1938. The next year they joyously welcomed their only child, James Otis Miller to the world. Throughout her marriage, the family lived in Houston, TX; Mena, AK; San Augustine, TX; Taft, TX; Corpus Christi, TX; Las Crusas, NM; Porter, TX; before finally settling in Tomball, TX in 1974 where she lived next door to her son and his family.

Nema reveled in her role as homemaker and wife to her husband, and mother to her son Jimmy. Secretly, she had always wanted a daughter, and happily adopted her daughter-in-law Pat as "the daughter she never had". Living next door to each other for over 40 years, the two women developed an extremely close and loving relationship. As she watched her grandsons grow into men, she later stated how happy she felt that she had the opportunity to have a front row seat to all the shenanigans they pulled (and then would regale you with a highly entertaining story typically at the boy's expense).

Nema began a new chapter in life in 1998, when, after 60 years of marriage, her husband passed away. Her younger sister Tody moved in, and together with their other sister Rudy they took Nema under their wing. Together the "Golden Girls", as they were known by Nema's family, traveled to bluegrass festivals, visited the Black Hills, attended the annual family reunions, attended Sturgis, the list goes on.

Her son Jim and daughter-in-law took her on a Mississippi River paddleboat cruise, a Caribbean Cruise, and many other vacations. Just a few years ago, she even rode across the country to attend her great-granddaughter's college graduation in Savannah, GA.

In her later years, Nema had slowed down just a bit. She would often be found sitting like a queen in her chair (aka "the Throne"), regaling her courtiers with stories of times past, while crocheting another baby hat to be donated to the local hospital or to be given as a precious gift to be worn by a member of the next generation. She was had an  unending supply of kisses and hugs, and was always offering "a kiss and a peck, and a hug around the neck."

Weekday afternoons were quiet time as she crocheted while she watched soap operas. She was an avid fan of her "stories", and if you weren't, well that was ok, she was perfectly happy to catch you up on all the storylines so you didn't feel left out while you watched with her (because watch them you would). Nema was also very free with life advise and was the best neighborhood watch anyone could ask for.

It was during this time she deepened the relationship with her niece, Delight Groom, who stayed with her "Auntie" for 3 years managing her household, finances, and keeping an eye on her at night. Nema was fond of saying "Tody had two daughters….one for her and one for me. Delight is mine." And then laugh.   As Jim and Pat aged, and Nema's needs increased, Delight's loving sacrifice was greatly needed, and appreciated.

Nema was a proud and dedicated member of the Eastern Stars since her youth. She served as Worthy Matron of the local chapter in 1980-1981. She attended her last meeting in January of this year, where she celebrated her 99th birthday with her fellow Eastern Star sisters.

Services will be held at 2:00 in the afternoon this Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Klein Funeral Home located at 1400 W Main St, Tomball, TX 77375. A reception will follow at the family homestead.
