Wylie Don Nickell went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2022. Don was born on November 8, 1941 in Seagraves, Texas to Wylie W. and Iva C. Nickell. He is preceded in death by his parents. Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wanda Nickell of Spring, Texas, daughter Debra Sue Johnson and husband Brent, son Dennis Lee Nickell and wife Jeannette and son John Wesley Nickell. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Matthew Johnson and wife Samantha, Rachel Rebello and husband Ian, Andrew Johnson, Jordan Nickell, Jennifer Nickell and Joshua Nickell. He is also survived by his 3 great grandchildren: Emilie, Hailey and Noah Johnson.
When Don was still a baby, his family moved to Houston, and he lived in the Houston area the rest of his life. He attended local neighborhood schools and graduated from Sam Houston High School in January 1960. He joined the United States Marine Corps the next day.
On November 3, 1961, while still in the Marines, he and Wanda got married. They had 3 children, Debra, Dennis & John. He was in the Marines for 6 years and served a term in Viet Nam. After discharge he applied for the Houston Police Academy and was accepted. That had been his dream job since he was a teenager. He retired from the department after 40 years of service.
After retirement he enjoyed traveling, especially cruising. He and Wanda went on several cruises, but he made sure he took each of the children on a cruise too. Those trips were the special ones.
When he was no longer able to travel, he bought himself a big screen TV and a power recliner and sat back and enjoyed old western movies the rest of his days. He died a happy man.
Don was a loving, caring, and generous man. If someone was in need, he usually found a way to help. He will be greatly missed.
