Wilfredo Crespo, 66, passed away in the early morning of Sunday, March 24, 2024, surrounded by his wife and family, after a resilient and fierce battle with cancer.
Wilfredo, also known as Papo, Papi, Viejito, Grampy, and Willy, was born in The Bronx on July 3, 1957, to Angel and Gloria Crespo. He spent the early years of his life in Puerto Rico alongside his two brothers, Nelson and Junior, and two sisters, Maritza and Rosita. In the early 1980s, the three brothers returned to The Bronx, and Papo got his first job at a French restaurant washing dishes. It turned out to be his greatest decision because it's where he met a bombshell French waitress who ended up being the love of his life, Francoise, or as he called her, Shorty.
They were married on November 24, 1982, when their daughter Lori was six, and soon welcomed their son Fred. In 1994, they bought their first home in Yonkers, NY, and made it their family home for the next 25 years. Papo spent his career as a distinguished bus operator, navigating routes all throughout New York City for the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority. He loved to spend time with his family and was a loyal man who forged lifelong friendships with people from all walks of life. While he may have been a person of few words, his unending generosity helped turn those friends into family. Papo was also an ardent animal lover, always adopting dogs and neighborhood cats. He enjoyed driving around with his family, scoping out the city for classic cars, and riding his motorcycle.
Papo is survived by his wife, Francoise "Frenchy"; his two children, Laurence "Lori", and Frederic "Fred"; his brothers, Nelson and Junior, and his sister Rosita; his grandchildren, Mathew, Emily, and Sebastien; his godchildren Jamie Lee and Nelson Jr.; and a beautiful extended family that spans the world.
