Walter Schramm went to heaven on Thursday, January 9, 2020 to be with Jesus and join wife Marian, and many other friends and relatives, who had gone there before him.

Born in San Francisco, California in 1933 to William and Sophie Schramm (immigrants from Germany), he grew up with hard working parents, his brother Ray and a network of aunts, uncles and cousins in the San Francisco area.  Walter had many wonderful stories of his childhood and teenage years in San Francisco.

He graduated from Commerce High School in San Francisco and Concordia Lutheran College in 1956.

Walter married Marian Bernthal on 8/12/1956 in St. Louis, Missouri.  After getting married, they headed to Houston, Texas for his first teaching job and to start their life together.

Walter and Marian have five children, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Walter was a wonderful, patient father who taught his children about the love God and many other things.  He took his family many places, creating many wonderful memories.  He was also an awesome grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Walter served in Lutheran Schools as a Principal and Teacher for over 40 years in Texas (Houston, Corpus Christi, Ft. Worth, Killeen and Pasadena) and in Lake Worth, Florida.  He made a positive impression on countless students, sharing the Good News of God and teaching academics.  He also served on various committees, in one he assisted other Lutheran schools in the accreditation process. He taught many adult Bible Classes throughout the years.

Walter was one of the kindest people.  If a homeless person came to his office, he always made sure they had a hot meal.  He visited prisons and prayed and talked with the prisoners.  He ministered to migrant workers in Florida.

After retiring, Walter and Marian stayed active spending time with their children and grandchildren and with activities in their church.  They lead devotions and hymns weekly at a nursing home and also enjoyed many trips to HEB.  They always had a smile on their faces and kind words for others.

Walter had a green thumb and always had a beautiful garden and yard.  He and Marian also loved birds and would enjoy watching birds come to the bird feeders they had set out. Chasing squirrels away from the feeders also became part of the routine. He enjoyed wood work and loved taking something old and making it like new again.

Walter spent his last 3 years at Tiffin House in Georgetown, Texas surrounded by people who loved him and provided exceptional care.

Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marian and his parents William and Sophie Schramm.

Walter is survived by his children: Chris and Allan Gebert, Betsy Schramm, Julie and Bill Lierbo, Jenny and David Holsomback and Joel Schramm.  Grandchildren: Emily Gebert, Zach and Kerin Gebert, Josh and Katie Gebert, Alexander Schramm von Blucher, Isabelle Schramm von Blucher, John Lierbo, Jackie Lierbo, William Lierbo, Natalie and Brett Larsen, Nick and Jessica Holsomback, Rachel Schramm and Alyssa Schramm.  Great-grandchildren: Annora and Evie Gebert and Lilly and Maddie Gebert.  Brother and sister-in-law Ray and Mary Kaye Schramm and many other family and friends.
