Obituary

Thomas “Tommy” Townsend, Jr.

May 23, 1946 – September 27, 2026

Tommy Townsend, Houston, Texas, an Army veteran and longtime business owner who took to the open road with Bonnie, his wife of 60 years, and made friends at every stop, passed on September 27 in Houston. He was 80.

For Tommy and Bonnie, the destination was only part of the adventure. The journey and people they met along the way were the point.

Thomas Townsend was born on May 23, 1946, in St. Petersburg, Florida. He served his country in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Korea. His service was a point of pride and an important chapter in a life marked by loyalty and a deep sense of responsibility to others. He and Bonnie made a life grounded in faith and filled with family, friendships, laughter and more adventures than anyone could count. At the center of it all were their two sons, Tra (Thomas III) and Rodney, and the family that grew around them.

In 1977, Tommy founded Totco Machining in Houston, Texas. Every day, he worked alongside Bonnie and their son Tra, who joined the business full time in 1988. As its longtime owner, he built the company on hard work, determination and relationships, and in business as in friendship, a handshake from Tommy meant something. So did his word.

He believed life was meant to be lived, and he and Bonnie lived it. They cheered the boys from childhood sports, family growth and successful careers, rode with Gold Wing motorcycle clubs and enjoyed classic cars along the way. They were rarely standing still for long.

RV travel became one of the great chapters of their life together, but for Tommy he grew into something even greater. For the last nine years of his life, the All-Inclusive Motorhome (AIM) Club became a passion, a purpose, and a community he poured his heart and soul into. Tommy grew the club from just 54 members to more than 25,000, welcoming newcomers and building friendships everywhere he went. He loved being in campgrounds and in the parking lots of service centers, surrounded by motorhomes and the people he so generously loved. Tommy was never simply AIM’s president. He was its host, storyteller, ambassador, heart and soul, and the Mayor of the motorhome industry. The community he built stands as one of the great legacies of his life, and of the industry.

Those who knew Tommy will remember a man who worked hard, played hard, loved his family deeply, lived his faith and was always ready for whatever came next. He enjoyed life, and he wanted the people around him to enjoy it with him.

He held many titles: soldier, business owner, club president, traveler and friend. The ones that mattered most were husband, father and family man.

The family is especially grateful to Doris Little, Tommy and Bonnie’s first cousin and a retired nurse practitioner, whose love, knowledge and steady presence comforted them both throughout Tommy’s final journey. Her care was a gift when it mattered most.

In addition to Bonnie, Tommy is survived by his sons, Tra Townsend and his wife, Carol, and Rodney Townsend and his wife, Liz; his grandchildren, Talia Townsend, Graysen Monk, Tysen Monk and Madisen Townsend; and a great-grandson on the way.

There was always another trip to take, another friend to meet, another story to tell.
