Thomas "Tommy" Neil Marek Sr., a legendary pioneer in all that he did, took his final earthly breaths on August 7, 2024 surrounded by his children. He had a passion for plants and animals and creating joy and lasting memories for everyone he met. A stranger to him was never a stranger for long. He would share whatever he had with anyone that needed it. Never one to conform, Tommy was a diabetic that loved any kind of ice cream sundae. He could often be found taking visitors on a safari at his ranch or moving dirt around.
Tommy was born on August 20, 1950, to the late Ralph and Martha Marek in Houston, Texas. He had a profound love for nature and plants and in 1978 he founded Magnolia Gardens Nursery in Magnolia, Texas. In the business he instilled the values of innovation, legacy, and integrity which the business still operates on today. Together with his first wife of 38 years, Frances "Franny" Smith, he had two children, Neil and Amanda. The family enjoyed countless unique experiences together through travel and Tommy and Franny's love for bringing everyone together to enjoy their home. Tommy later married the late Sunghee "Sunny" Yang and the two enjoyed many adventures together as well. Tommy got his most prized title of "Grandpa" when his daughter had his first grandchild, Avery in 2020 and his grandson Cooper in 2022. He often talked about how much he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and sharing his love for animals and adventure with them.
Tommy is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Martha Marek, his second wife Sunny Yang and countless pets that he loved dearly.
Tommy is survived by his children Neil Marek and his wife Brandi, Amanda Shook and her husband Josh; his two most prized family members, his grandchildren, Avery Shook and Cooper Shook; his Brother, Stan Marek and his wife Reinnette and their children; his cousin Tim Nolz; his first wife, Franny Smith; along with several Marek family cousins.
A celebration of life will take place for Tommy on August 24, 2024 at his ranch beginning at 6PM. Tommy would want for everyone to celebrate the love he shared for everyone. Please come dressed in your best Hawaiian shirt and shorts. Enjoy food, entertainment, and a safari. For directions, please text or call the family directly.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to please visit your local independent garden center and purchase a plant in his honor to keep with you to always remember his love, and to live each day with purpose.
