Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Thomas Joseph "TJ" Doherty, who peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 18, 2026. Surrounded by his family at his home in Houston, Texas, TJ completed a courageous five-year battle with multiple lung diseases. Throughout his 70 years, he touched countless lives with his kindness, generosity, humor, tolerance, and an unwavering spirit of forgiveness.

TJ was born on July 3, 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was the son of John Edward Doherty Sr. and Mary Jane (Taube) Doherty.  He grew up alongside his siblings John, Aileen, Colleen, Kevin, and Kathleen—building a strong, uncommonly harmonious bond that lasted a lifetime.

For 33 years, TJ and his devoted wife, Neva, owned and operated Capital Construction Services, Inc. serving the greater Houston area with pride and a commitment to quality work in the construction industry.  Their reputation for excellence ensured that businesses knew the job would always be done right.

Beyond his professional work, TJ was deeply committed to helping others. Throughout his 29-year journey in Alcoholics Anonymous, he offered compassion and support to anyone who reached out to him, never turning away a single soul in need. His warmth and open heart left a lasting mark on everyone blessed to know him.

TJ knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures: rounds of golf and watching countless Astros games with Neva, trips to Reno, Family pinochle, chaotic Christmas gatherings, Motown music, hot rods, and basking in the sun in his backyard paradise. But what he cherished most were the quiet, meaningful moments with his family—giving a "Big Squeeze" to Uncle T, going mudding on the 4-wheeler, and taking the family floating down the Guadalupe River. None of these decades of cherished memories would have been possible without the unwavering love and dedication of his wife, Neva.

TJ  was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward and Mary Jane Doherty, He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Neva (Lucas) Doherty; his son Jay Doherty; his daughter Olivia Doherty; his siblings John Edward Doherty III and wife Cindy, Aileen Milton, Colleen Haynes and husband John Haynes, Kevin Doherty and wife Diane, Kathleen Powers and husband Stephen Powers.  He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends who will forever remember his kindness and spirit.

Thomas Joseph Doherty will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of loved ones.
