Obituary

Susan Joy Vanderhoof Baker passed away April 9, 2023. She was born March 18, 1957, to Donald and Barbara Vanderhoof in Alice, Texas. She will be dearly missed.

Susan attended Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi and graduated in 1975. While at Carroll, she was a member of the Tigerettes drill team. Her love of music and dance was shown throughout her life. Attending the Nutcracker ballet at Christmas was something she enjoyed, as was seeing live concerts and musicals.

On July 15, 1977, she married her soulmate, Randall "Randy" Baker. Together, they had four children: Melissa Leigh; Matthew Randall, who died in infancy; Andrew Christopher; and Sarah Ashley. Their marriage lasted nearly forty years, until the death of Randy. Their children rejoice that their parents have been reunited after years apart.

Following her graduation from Corpus Christi State University. Susan dedicated over twenty years to the education of children as a classroom teacher. She shared her love and knowledge with countless elementary students who have carried her positive influence in their lives. In 2020, she retired from Magnolia Independent School District.

One of Susan's greatest joys was spending time with family. Growing up, her children knew she would be in the stands at their various activities, cheering them on. Baking cookies, decorating for holidays, playing board games, and scrapbooking are other pastimes shared that have given treasured memories to her family. With the births of her six grandchildren, her heart became even more full. Her pride and joy in them shone on her face whenever she shared stories with anyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Randy Baker; son, Matthew Baker; and father, Donald Vanderhoof. She is survived by her children, Melissa Kanak and husband Kirk, Andrew Baker and wife Holly, and Sarah Smith and husband Nolan; grandchildren Evan and Leah Kanak, Hailey and Hayden Baker, and Caitlin and Grady Smith; mother, Barbara Vanderhoof; sisters Tamara Sells; Lori Pierce and husband Lowell, and Rebecca Thomson and husband Larry; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors from 5-7 pm on Thursday, April 13 , 2023, at Klein Funeral Home, 1400 W. Main, Tomball, Texas. Funeral service will be held Friday, April 14, 2023, in the chapel at the funeral home at 10:00 am.
