Suksoon Suh, Ph.D.
1922-2017

Dr. Suksoon Suh, born in South Korea on July 5, 1922, passed away on September 9, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife, three children and their spouses, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Dr. Suh was educated in Korea, Japan and the U.S., and was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard and UC Berkeley universities.  Dr. Suh returned to Korea where he held numerous cabinet positions, the last as Secretary of State.  Dr. Suh made a lasting impact on democracy and political freedom in Korea as a political science professor and department chair at Yonsei University, a political editor and commentator at Dong A Il Bo, a national newspaper, and KBS, a national TV station.

Unable to exercise freedom of speech nor to advocate true democracy in politics, Dr. Suh and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 as a visiting professor.  In 1967, Dr. Suh, his wife and two younger of four children (Sally and Dick) settled in Georgetown, TX, where he was a political science professor, department chair and summer school administrator at Southwestern University.  Dr. Suh was an avid tennis player, and he coached his son, Dick, to the Texas state championship in doubles, the first time for anyone in Georgetown.

After 26 years at Southwestern University, Dr. Suh retired and moved to Houston, TX.

Dr. Suh is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Heeshin Suh; his sons, Euisoo Suh and Kyungsun Suh; daughter Sally Vardy; grandchildren, Ryung Suh, Justin Suh, Lucas Suh, Michelle Suh, Danielle Suh and Samuel Vardy; and great grandchildren, Justice Suh, Madison Suh, Joshua Suh and Caleb Suh.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065.
