Obituary

Sue Belle Elekta Brandt was born February 6, 1927 in Spencer, N.C. to George Dalton and Virginia Wells Brandt. She had 8 brothers and 2 sisters that preceded her in death. She graduated from high school at 16 and had to wait a year before being accepted into the WWII Corp of Cadet Nurses program. Sue worked at the 5 and 10 store while she waited. She earned spending money by ironing her brother's shirts for work. She still loved to iron many years later claiming she found it relaxing. When her friends, who were teachers and secretaries, asked what she was going to do, she replied, "Become a Nurse". She trained in Spartanburg, S.C. where she caught the eye of a young soldier, Robert Angel, with her mean backhand on the tennis courts. She graduated with her RN from Spartanburg General in 1945. When Hitler killed himself in April, she said it was because he knew she was coming after him with a rusty needle. She moved back to Spencer, N.C. and worked in Public Health scooting around in her black Plymouth coupe. She married Robert Angel and they had two children, Melanie in 1957 and Robert in 1961. Shell Oil took them all over the northern US but she was always able to find a position in hospital or school nursing. She retired from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Houston, Texas in 1989 after opening Yeager Elementary as their first nurse.

Sue loved her church, Lakewood UMC and was a founding member in 1975. She enjoyed her BSF Bible Study classes and traveling the world with Robert. He was the love of her life and she missed him deeply after his passing. They are together now in heaven hanging at the beach or hiking the Smoky Mountains. She will be deeply missed by her daughter and son and their families and many loving nieces and nephews.
