STEPHEN MARSHALL SMITH went to live with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 17, 2022. Steve was born on November 19, 1938 in the small Texas town of Marlin. He was predeceased by his parents Christine Marshall Smith and Ernest Wesley Smith, and his sister Marilyn Hughes Smith. Christine graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Latin. Ernest Wesley Smith served as United State Postmaster for his entire career. Ernest taught Steve so much, including, "If you ever feel sorry for yourself, just look around". Steve was blessed with a phenomenal ability to play basketball. In Marlin, he was named as a high school All-State player for the State of Texas. He played basketball at Rice University and was awarded the coveted Billy Wohn MVP basketball award. He also earned a place on the Dean's List as an excellent student. He graduated from Rice University in 1961. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sheryl Anne Trahan Smith, the love of his life. They met in Houston while both living at the Allen House on Allen Parkway. The 6' 6" Steve and 5'2" Sheryl were a precious couple. Hence, Steve's endearing nickname of "Mouse" for Sheryl. Steve loved his devoted wife dearly until the day he died. Steve enjoyed a successful career in mortgage banking culminating in his own company Marshall Mortgage. Steve encouraged all of his children to be as well educated as possible and to always do their best. He is survived by his two children Scott Wesley Smith (Baylor University) and Susanne Marshall Nelson (STCL JD and Pepperdine Caruso School of Law LLM). He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Abigail Christine Smith (Furman University), Isabel Taylor Nelson (Pepperdine University), Logan Hunter Nelson (Baylor University), Grace Elizabeth Smith (Sarah Lawrence College), and Luke Wesley Smith (attending Dulles High School). They were the love, pride, and joy of his life. He is also survived by his loving nephew, Webster Hughes of North Carolina (UNC and Princeton phD). Steve also lived by another saying of his Daddy, "If everyone follows the teachings of Christ, they and everyone who loves them will have a good life." Steve was a good, wise, brilliant man with a great sense of humor. He told the greatest stories and gave the best advice. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
