Obituary

Stephen Lane Johnson passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX.

Born June 7th, 1954 in Hampton, VA to Marion and Bill Johnson, Stephen, known to those who loved him as "Steve", grew up in South Texas with his parents and younger sister, Debra Miller. After graduating from South Houston High, he was accepted to Sam Houston State University as a Management major.

Upon graduation, he was immediately offered a job at Cameron Iron Works, where he was well known for his outstanding softball prowess as the clean-up batter in the Cameron Recreation League of the 70's-80's. His team, the fabled Wild Bunch, were the top team in the league for many years. Colleagues in the Wild Bunch dubbed Steve "Rooster", because whenever he took off his baseball cap, his thick hair would be molded into a coxcomb.

Steve would dedicate 40 years of his life to the oil industry before retiring. During retirement, he lived his life to the fullest, spending time with family, taking long walks, attending rock concerts, traveling, and taking in the stars at his second home in Bandera, TX with his beloved wife of 22 years, Rita Nix Johnson.

Steve is preceded by his parents and sister, and survived by his wife, Rita, his children: Dustin Johnson, Stephanie & Jeremy Drinkwine in Tennessee, and Joseph & Christie Salvagio, Nicholas & Cassandra Salvagio, Leah Salvagio, Tony & Angela Salvagio; and his grandchildren: Nicholas Salvagio Jr., Kirsten Bernal, Zoee Johnson, Franco Salvagio, Verona Salvagio, Grayson Miller, and McKinnley Miller.

Steve was known for his kindness and sense of humor, and inspired many with his strength and drive to live. Although gone, his spirit continues to shine through his loved ones and family.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a celebration of life ceremony is pending.
