Stanley Stuart Thurber was born September 3, 1940, in Lawrence, KS, to Stuart and Sylvia Thurber. Stan joined his wife Alice in heaven on February 20, 2020.
He graduated from Overbrook Rural High School, Overbrook, KS, in 1958. Stan also graduated from University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, in 1963 with a BS in Petroleum Engineering. He then went on to obtain his Master's degree from University of Texas, Austin, TX, in 1968.
Stan married Alice Vivian Rector, August 31, 1963. They enjoyed almost 51 years of marriage before her passing in 2014. While Stan and Alice had no children of their own, nieces and nephews played a large role in their lives.
Stan's 40-year career in petroleum engineering took him to many countries around the globe. He and Alice enjoyed the middle east and traveling to many different countries over the years. During this time they made lifelong friends and enjoyed entertaining. Upon his retirement, Stan remained active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He also served on the Memorial Northwest Homeowners Association Board.
Stan is survived by his sister, Sharon Thurber, and her husband, Ken Ward, of Lake Stevens, WA; his brother-in-law, Jim W. Rector and his wife, Becky, of Culpeper, VA. In addition, he will be missed by his nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest Dr. Spring, Texas 77379. Please join the family for a small reception after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Clinton Presbyterian Church, C/O Charlie Thomas, 673 E. 475 RD., Lawrence, KS 66047. Please earmark the contribution for rebuilding of the church. The family church was destroyed in a fire in 2019.
An additional memorial service will be held in Kansas at a later date. Interment of his ashes will take place in the family plot in Clinton Cemetery, Lawrence, KS.
