Sonny Wilcox, 84 years, 11 months, & 26 days, of Conroe, Texas, beloved husband, son, and cousin, peacefully entered the Gates of Heaven on the evening of March 30, 2022, at his home with the love of his life, Carolyn Laird Wilcox.

Sonny Boy was born on April 5, 1937, in Houston, Texas, and reared in Dodge County, Georgia on his family's farmland. In 1949, they moved to Tomball, Texas, to open the Western Auto Store, working alongside his father.  He graduated from Tomball High School in 1957, where he served his junior and senior year as the Student Band Director.  He attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College.  Sonny was a gifted musician who could play any instrument he picked up.  At the age of 17, he borrowed money from the bank to buy a Fender Telecaster guitar.  Sonny travelled around Houston playing at dances and other events. He created his own teen radio program playing and singing on KSTAR Radio from 1956-57. He was offered the opportunity to work with the USO.  During Trail Ride, he played bass for the locally famous fiddler Leon "Pappy" Self and his Blue Ridge Boys.

In the 1960s, Sonny purchased the Western Auto store from his father and operated it until the 1980s. He became a close family friend to the Lairds when he began attending church with them.  He learned to play church songs on his guitar while Mrs. Laird played the piano.  Soon, Sonny and Carolyn were dancing their way across Texas at the Texas Tumbleweed, and because of their track record, they eloped to Georgia to get married in 1986.  Since that day, they have been inseparable.  Attending church together at Riverside Assembly of God, Sonny playing the guitar while Carolyn played the organ.  Carolyn began singing with First Baptist Church and because Sonny always said, "Where she goes, I go", he created his own job of handing out bulletins and holding the door for the choir to process in.  They loved travelling without a schedule.  Together, they went every odd year, exploring the National Parks through the United States, including Sonny's favorite, a helicopter trip through Glacier National Park. Wherever they went, they always had the time of their lives.

Throughout his life, Sonny was into everything.  He was a member of the Lion's Club in Tomball and served as the District Treasurer. Sonny was on the Go Texan Committee and was responsible for the rodeo prizes (although he was reluctant to grow the beard and mustache required).  He was a professional bass fisherman and loved to talk to truckers on his CB where his handle was "Hubcap", and later, in honor of his friend, "Hubcap, Linear Lip 2-2". He was the emcee of whatever event was going on and was always the one people wanted.  If it needed to be done, Sonny would do it.

Sonny was preceded in death by his adopted and biological father Mr. John T. Wilcox, Sr. and his adopted mother Chloe Wilcox.  He is survived by his wife, best friend, and the love of his life, Carolyn Laird Wilcox, and his cousin, Thomas J. "Jay" Willcox of Warner Robbins, Georgia.

Honoring Sonny's request, a graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at 1:00pm at Oklahoma Cemetery in Oklahoma Community, TX off FM2978.  All are welcome to attend.
