Sharon Faye Egbert passed away September 8, 2026, at 1:00 am, at Village Green Memory Community, Cypress Texas.
Sharon was born on December 23, 1949, in Beaumont, Texas, to Carl Edwin Abbott and Faye Lindberg. Because she was very small at birth, her grandfather passed down his nickname, “Penny,” which he had received for the same reason. She never liked the name Sharon and was known throughout her life as Penny.
Penny grew up along with her sister Karen (McKenzie) in the South Park area of Beaumont Texas. She attended Pietasch Elementary where her mother taught kindergarten and first grade, then graduated from South Park High School in 1968. She attended Brigham Young University for one semester but did not like the cold and snow. She returned to Beaumont and attended Lamar University before moving to Houston where she worked for Whirlpool Corporation.
When Penny was born, her mother became extremely ill and remained in the hospital for nearly 6 months. Her father asked a fellow refinery worker, Dorson Smith, if he and his wife Ida could keep Penny while her mother remained at the hospital. This was agreeable and Penny maintained a relationship with Dorson, Ida, and her daughter Clarese for the remainder of her life. Clarese married Thurman Allred and they became the second mom and dad to Penny.
Penny met Gary LeRoy Egbert at a Young Adult Sunday School meeting in Houston Texas in December 1973. They immediately recognized a special bond existed and were married in Houston on May 18, 1974. Penny was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served as choir director in every ward where she lived until her health began to take a toll. Penny had a natural gift of music. Her voice was that of an angel and she stole the heart of her husband the first time he heard her sing. Penny developed life-long friendships from those who sung in her choirs. Those special experiences during choir practice and performances uplifted both her choir members and those who listened to their performances.
Penny is survived by her husband Gary Egbert, their 3 children, Brian (Jennifer) Egbert, Jennifer (Dennis) McCray, Holly (Jonathan) Sandstrum, and three grandchildren, Jenny Clarese Bartenfeld, Joshua Kinyon Egbert and Isaac Austin Egbert as well as her sister Karen McKenzie.
Funeral services for Penny will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Cypress Texas Stake Center, 12310 New Hampton Drive, Tomball, Tx. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5-8:00 PM at Klein Funeral Home, 1400 West Main, Tomball Texas, and a viewing beginning at 9:30 AM at the Cypress Texas Stake Center. Her interment will follow the services at Klein Memorial Park, 32539 SH 249, Pinehurst Texas.
