Sarah Lucia Swonke, 92, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023 at Tomball Regional Medical Center with her sons by her side. Sarah was born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on September 24, 1930 to Carlos and Lucia Urias. The oldest of five children, she grew up in Fort Stockton but spent time in Italy, Germany, and New Mexico before moving to Tomball in 1958. She attended UT Galveston and received her LVN. As a nurse, she joined the staff working for Dr. Arlo Yaege at Leon Memorial Hospital on Main St. and later working in the ER and respiratory sections at Tomball Hospital on Carrell St. She moved on to part-time, private practice nursing and eventually began to spend more time applying her healthcare and bi-lingual skills in charitable ways.
Sarah was well-known for her activity in the community and readiness to help those in need. Easily evident in her life was her love and participation in her many roles at St. Anne Catholic Church and her time that she volunteered towards helping others. Beginning in the 1990's, Sarah was involved in the establishment and growth of TOMOGWA Health Ministries, eventually serving on the Board of Directors. Around the same time, she participated in a number of mission trips to Central America and Mexico including the Heart for Honduras program through Salem Lutheran Church. At St. Anne's she was an organist for many years and an active member in the church choir. She was also a member of the Alter Society and was instrumental in the establishment of the Spanish-speaking ministries at St. Anne's.
Sarah is survived by her two brothers Carlos Urias Jr. and his wife Mary (Guymon, Ok.), and Benny Urias (Ft. Stockton, Tx); her three sons Michael and fiancé Cindy Chamberlain (Denton, Tx), Tony (Tomball, Tx), Carlos and his wife Liza Valenzuela (Austin, Tx); her six grandchildren Jenna Rank, Evan Swonke, Ellie Swonke, Emily Myers, Olivia Swonke, and Andrew Swonke; and her three great grandchildren Everly Rank, Isla Swonke, and Luke Swonke. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Rose Mary Vasquez, and her brother Pete Urias.
A Rosary service will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church in Tomball at 7:15 pm on Thursday, May 25, 2023. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 10:30 am also at St. Anne Catholic Church.
Your prayers and your part in Sarah's wonderful life are the greatest gifts you can share but if you wish to commemorate her in another way please consider a donation in her name to TOMAGWA or your favorite charity, in lieu of flowers.
