Ruth Erin Potter's Obituary
Ruth Erin Maddox Potter returned to the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on August 11, 2017, healed of the illnesses and injuries that were her cross to bear in this world. She is also reunited with her husband, Walter Stanley Potter, who preceded her in death after 51 years of marriage.
Though born in Corpus Christi on October 28, 1943, and living in other parts of the state and country as a young child, Ruth's home was Houston. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and volunteered as a "candy striper" at Shriner's Children's Hospital before she decided upon her ultimate vocation – taking care of her family.
After raising her two children, Beckie and Boots, she took on the role of caretaker to anyone that she could comfort or support. When her sister became ill and had no children or family of her own, Ruth was there. When her step-father became ill, the staff at the VA, and later the nursing home, was surprised to discover that Ruth was not Jim's biological daughter because she was always there, always caring. As her mother-in-law aged, Ruth devoted herself to her care and loved her as much as any daughter could.
During those rare moments Ruth had for herself, she loved to sew, quilt, and crochet, though she was frustrated that she never mastered knitting. Family members will cherish the quilts and other items that she made for them with such love. Family and friends have also enjoyed her homemade jellies, pickles and (most especially) apple butter, the annual making of which has created a wonderful tradition that will be continued in fond remembrance.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Herman Maddox and Erin Wilder; step-father, Jim Wilder; husband, Walter Stanley Potter; and sister, Jolayne Rustomji. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Tony Croes; son and daughter-in-law, Walter Stanley Potter, Jr. and Lisa Mitchell; and brother, Gregg Maddox. She was proud to be called "Granny" by her four grandchildren, Alex, Erin, Priscilla, and Bryce.
Friends are invited to a memorial service in Ruth's honor at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 19, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065.
