Roy A. Horne, age 74, of Spring, TX died Monday, February 5, 2024. Roy was born in Centreville, Mississippi and is the son of the late Hillery and Hilma Horne. Roy is survived by his wife, Susan Horne, and together they have 4 children: Jared Horne, Lauren Crawford (Patrick), John Gibson (Margarita) and Jennifer Brown (Matt) and 4 grandsons: Logan, Garrett, Colt and Noah.
Roy graduated from Bay High School in Panama City, Florida in 1967 and excelled in basketball and baseball. He set numerous records in basketball leading Bay High in scoring both his junior and senior years and was Most Valuable Player his senior year.
Roy received an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Mississippi Community College in 1969 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Mississippi State University in 1971.
During his two years at Southwest he played basketball, baseball and tennis. Roy earned the MVP Award in basketball and was selected to the 1968-69 All State Junior College Team. In tennis Roy was the 2nd Singles Junior College State Champion. He was Sophomore Class President and an active member of the Baptist Student Union. In 2015 Roy was inducted into Southwest's Sports Hall of Fame.
At Mississippi State University Roy played shortstop on the baseball team winning two Southeastern Conference Championships in 1970 and 71. In 1971 MSU advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska becoming the first team in MSU's history to participate in the tournament. Go Bulldawgs!
Roy worked as a Landman in the Oil & Gas industry for 38 years prior to retiring in 2019. In retirement he continued to play tennis and golf regularly beating his competition. He is a member of Trinity Klein Lutheran Church and in past years was very active at Cypress Creek Christian Church serving as a Stephen Minister Lay Chaplain and Elder Board Chair. Roy also served in the Mississippi National Guard from 1971 to 1977, the Infantry Unit based in Meadville, MS and as a percussionist in of the 41st Army National Guard Band, based in Jackson, MS.
Above all, Roy was the kind of guy who never met a stranger. Once you were his friend you were his friend for life.
