Obituary

Roger Dean Lieder died unexpectedly on July 25, 2018, in New Braunfels, TX. Born in Houston on June 14, 1956, he grew up in Cypress and learned about the fire services watching his father's involvement in the establishment of Cy Fair Fire Department. As a teenager, he told his parents he wanted to be a firefighter but had to wait until he was 19 to join due to age requirements. He then joined Houston Fire Department (HFD) and started a career in the fire services that continued until 2018.
Roger's love for the fire services grew each year with his education and street experiences. He learned every aspect of every fire truck and could recite the specifics of each piece of equipment. From the pumper truck to the ladder truck, he could go through in detail each apparatus. If you challenged his information, you were in for a healthy debate. His boyish pranks kept each station on their toes and filled with laughter because you never knew when he would strike.
He took on the challenge of becoming a paramedic and a new passion for the EMS sector was born. He was instrumental in launching and designing the heavy rescue truck that HFD uses today. He taught classes on the use of the truck, the tools it carried including the jaws of life.
Roger joined Cy Fair Fire Department along with his father and served the Cypress area for many years. As Chief of Rosehill Fire Department in the late 80's, he was instrumental in shaping the future Rosehill Fire Department through his HFD experience and increasing training. When he moved to Waller county in 2006, Roger got involved with those departments and was a member of Rolling Hills Fire Department and Tri-County. If that wasn't enough, he was a co-founder of Whitehall Fire Department and served as Assistant Chief. His love and his passion were truly the fire services. He dedicated his life to promoting it and improving it wherever he lived.
He is survived by his wife of over 15 years, Kathleen McCormick Lieder, who met Roger while she cared for him in Hermann ED after having heat exhaustion during a Houston fire. He has a son, Jason Lieder, of Boston, MA; a daughter, Marlyn Lieder and partner Zack Selmser, of Groveland, CA; a step-daughter, Karly Wagner Parsons; a grandson, Hayden Lieder-Selmser; and a step-grandson, Kolten Wagner. He is also survived by his father, Lawrence Anton Lieder; brother, Larry Lieder, and his wife Elaine, of Indiana; brother, David Lieder, and his wife Christy, of Cypress; sister, Carolyn Elsey, of Cypress; and many nieces and nephews in the surrounding area. Roger was preceded in death by his mother Mildred Hobbs Lieder.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Klein Funeral Home - Tomball, 1400 W. Main, Tomball, TX 77375. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Salem Lutheran Church, 22601 Lutheran Church Road, Tomball, TX 77377. A committal service with fire department honors will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston.
