Roger was born in Alabama in 1947 to Mamie and Walker Campbell. Roger attended Sam Houston High School where he met Sharon, his loving wife of more than 50 years. Two days after they were married in 1967, he started work at the Houston Fire Department.

Roger moved through the HFD ranks quickly. Fortunately, he met a bunch of "Union Strong" firefighters and became a dedicated member of Local 341 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). He served in a variety of leadership roles for Local 341 from 1975 to 1992, including trustee, convention delegate, vice president, and served on numerous committees. He also was in charge of the union sign shop where numerous local political campaigns began. He truly enjoyed working side-by-side with former L-341 President Lester Tyra.

In 1976, he was promoted to senior captain where he got to work under Chief Duke Jahnke at HFD Station 28. In 1984, he went to HFD Station 34 where he was driven by his trusted compadre, Bruce "Skibo" Simmons. He was promoted to District Chief in 1991 and stayed at Station 34. When Lester Tyra became Fire Chief, he brought along his trusted sidekick, Roger, promoted to Assistant Fire Chief over emergency operations. During his time at Station 34, the infamous Camping Trip was started. It started in Livingston, went to Limestone, Inks Lake, and now Richland Chambers. Roger served as "Mayor." He perfected the phrase, "Handled it."

Another huge part of Roger's life was the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 1985, he joined the Safety Committee. From 1993 to 1995, he served as its chairman. In 2001, he became an HLSR Director. In 2019, after 35 years of service, he became a lifetime director. He has numerous friends he so dearly loved that will miss his presence in the HLSR Board Room and Directors Club.

First and foremost, Roger was a family man. He was a loving husband and father. He prided himself in taking care of his family. His daughter, Kimberly, was born in 1969. His son, Jimmy, was born in 1976. Roger did everything in his power to provide a fantastic life for his family, including working numerous side jobs. He so dearly loved and was so proud of his grandchildren – Daniel, Kolton, Jamie, Kalie, and Zoie.

Anyone who knew Roger – as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, neighbor, or friend – knew that he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

Friends are invited to visit with the family between 5 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at Klein Funeral Home – CyFair, 9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at Salem Lutheran Church, 22601 Lutheran Church Road, Tomball, TX 77377. Interment will follow at Brookside Memorial Park in Houston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Firefighters Helping Firefighters, HFD Honor Guard, HFD Pipes and Drums, or HPFFA Charitable Foundation.
