Robert (Bob) Elwood Naugle passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022, in Richmond, TX. The youngest of five children, he was born at home in Roselle Park, New Jersey on August 29, 1929, and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Avalyn who passed away in February 2021. Bob was the youngest and last surviving child of Albert and Irma Naugle and now joins their family reunion with his brother and sisters. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity towards his family and 67 years of devotion to his wife.

Bob graduated from Roselle Park High School where he lettered in wrestling. He was the NJ regional wrestling champion in 1947 and narrowly missed making the 1948 Olympic Team. He graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1951 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and started his 39-year career with Esso Standard Oil (Exxon) at their Bayway Refinery. After Bayway, his next assignment was in California working on the design, construction, and startup of the Benicia Refinery. This was the first computer-controlled refinery in the world and the first grass roots refinery built in the US in over 20 years. Subsequent assignments took him to Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Coral Gables, Florida; Aruba; Buenos Aires, Argentina and London, England. He became a recognized expert in refinery maintenance and operations and after retirement continued consulting work in the U.S., Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Spain and Italy.

Bob was always very active in his church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, council member in several churches and was active in mission efforts, including mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala. At the Woodlands Methodist Church, he served as the head of the Missions Committee which dispersed over $1 million in annual donations to 60 organizations worldwide. He was also very involved in the Special Olympics organization in Texas for many years, even involving his grandchildren.

Bob had a wry wit and always was up for fun with friends. He was kind and generous and dedicated to his family's welfare and happiness. He maintained a keen interest in the lives and activities of his grandchildren up to the very end of his life. He loved to dance with Avalyn, they played tennis and golf together and were keen skiers for as long as their bodies would allow. His favorite place to visit was Lake Tahoe where he could reunite with friends and enjoy the outdoors and skiing. He was an avid Raider fan, even attending a winning Super Bowl.

Robert was predeceased by his wife Avalyn and daughter Kimberly as well as all his siblings – Gladys, Marshall, Mildred, and Madeline. He is survived by: his son David and wife Carol Ann; daughter Lisa Short and husband Jim; sister-in-law Helen Cook; brother-in-law James Cook and wife Judy; brother-in-law Robert Cook and wife Carol; sister-in-law Linda Volckmann and husband Bill. He leaves three grandchildren: Nicholas Naugle, Andrea Naugle and Megan Short Hanson with her husband Troy; and is survived by 14 nieces and nephews. Bob is also the last of his senior golf group to move to those great links on the other side. Better hurry Dad, they're waiting on the first tee for you.
