Robert Espey, 55, died unexpectedly on October 25, 2021. Robb was born October 3, 1966 in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his parents, Harry Ross Espey of Houston, Texas and Alice Connell Espey of Orlando, Florida; his brother Randal Connell Espey (Kim) of Suwannee, Georgia; the love of his life, best friend and wife, Elizabeth Carey, and four-legged companion Malbec of Houston, Texas; nieces Amanda Alice Edmonston (Christopher) of Orlando, Florida; Alexandra Nicole Espey of Whitesboro, New York; and nephew Brady Allen Espey of Austin, Texas; step-niece and nephew Mimi Middlebrooks of Colorado and Grayson Middlebrooks of Georgia; 3 great nephews; and many other relatives. He is preceded in death by his brother Harry Ross Espey, Jr.; and his two Labrador retrievers, Merlot and Tempranillo. He was a 1985 graduate of Memorial High School in Houston, Texas, where he played football. While he took the long way through college making stops at Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin, he eventually earned a communications degree from his beloved alma mater, the University of Houston. "Go Coogs" was often heard while in his presence. Robb would light up a room with his big personality, booming radio voice, gregariousness, and hilarious stories. He was a gentle giant, with a warm and kind presence. He never met a stranger and could literally talk to anyone. He grew up spending his summers in Galveston, where he spent his days fishing in the canals. He also learned to snow ski at the age of four and spent many weekends on the slopes of Colorado. Robb was a voracious reader. With his amazing memory and recall, he knew everything about Texas barbecue, college football, Houston professional sports, and rock music. If a barbecue restaurant appeared in the Texas Monthly top 10, you can be sure he had been there. He knew the stats of every player for the Houston Cougars, Astros, Rockets and Texans, and could recall the details of some random game played 15 years ago. In fact, calling sports radio stations to answer sports trivia was a hobby. One time he called into a radio station during a "stump the guest" contest. Rather than asking a stat-filled question, Robb asked the guest, "what was the seat number and row of the guy that caught the fly ball in the outfield" during a certain game. The guest couldn't believe such a ridiculous question was even asked, but because he was unable to answer it, Robb was awarded two prime seat tickets to an Astros home game. Attending concerts was another of his passions. He saw his favorite bands multiple times, including Pearl Jam, Rush, Stone Temple Pilots, The Cult, and ZZ Top. He also loved the great outdoors. Robb and Elizabeth spent many weekends camping, where they would enjoy fresh air and nature while taking a hike through the woods. The beach was his happy place, where he could enjoy the soothing sounds of the surf. He loved aviation, travel, all animals, history, politics and a good debate (that according to him, he never lost). Road trips were never complete without a stop at every historical marker along the way. But most of all, Robb cherished the time with his family. While we are left to grieve the void he has left, we are comforted to know that he is spreading his joy in Heaven. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your favorite charity or animal rescue. Memorial service will be at 11:00am Friday, November 5, 2021 at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77024.
