Obituary

Rev. Robert "Bob" Earl Cheney, 89, of Tomball, TX, passed into the arms of his Savior on Friday, January 30th, 2026.

Born in Melrose Park, IL on December 23rd, 1936, he was the son of Earl and Lydia Cheney. After graduating from Proviso East HS, he completed his undergraduate education at Concordia University Chicago. He first served as a teacher and Director of Christian Education in schools and churches in Kendallville, IN; Marietta, GA; and Lake Wales, FL. He then attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, where he was trained and formed as a pastor in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

During his pastoral ministry, Bob faithfully served congregations in Okawville, IL; San Jose, CA; Independence, MO; Bristol, TN; Cherokee Village, AR; Union City, TN; and Dyersburg, TN. With a true shepherd's heart, he dedicated countless hours to preaching, teaching, and caring for his congregation members. Following his retirement, he continued to minister as a vacancy pastor in Cleveland, TX, as well as for many other churches, completing 50 years of service to the Church. Throughout his life, he was an avid fisher of men and women for Christ, devoted fisherman, and steam train enthusiast.

Bob is survived by his wife, Kay Cheney, sons Mark Cheney (Rebecca) and Paul Cheney (Kristy), and six grandchildren - Britton, Kaelyn, Eli, Micah, Joshua, and Luke. He is preceded in death by his parents and half-sisters Clara, Audrey, and Fava.

His funeral will be held at Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball, TX, on Saturday, February 7, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., the memorial service at 11:00 a.m., and a lunch to follow at noon in the fellowship hall.
