Robert Don Brooks left this life on October 18, 2016. He was born on April 4, 1931, in Geronimo, OK. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Brooks; son, Greg Brooks (wife Stephanie); daughter Carla Mahle (husband Jay); grandchildren Jessica Brooks, Zachary Brooks, Amanda Mahle and Rebecca Mahle; brother-in-law Keith Kilgore (wife Sherry). He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Jewell Brooks and brother Charles.
Don was a faithful Christian from a very young age, serving at times as a deacon and a Bible school teacher. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the U. S. Army. Following his military service, he earned his degree in education from Abilene Christian University. For most of his career as a teacher, he taught special education at Patrick Henry Middle School.
He was an avid reader enjoying a variety of topics. He had a wonderful memory and could elaborate on details long forgotten by others. His sense of humor brightened the day for friends and strangers alike.
He loved airplanes and boats.
His friends were many and devoted.
He loved to laugh and be silly at times.
He loved to tell old stories to his grandkids.
He pretty much taught himself how to use a computer.
He delighted in locating old friends and re-connecting via email.
It was hard for him to pass by a stranger and not utter a greeting.
He loved studying the Bible on his own and in classes.
He adored his family.
His grandchildren were the light of his life.
Funeral arrangements provided by Klein Funeral Home, 9719 Wortham Blvd., Houston, TX 77065, with visitation there on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services to be on Friday, October 21st, at 10:00 a.m. at Jersey Village Church of Christ, Houston, TX 77065. Burial following at Houston National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m.
