Robert Montgomery Brawley, 89, of Houston, Texas, died on June 21, 2019, at Brookdale Champions Assisted Living. He was born on April 18, 1930 in Gastonia, N.C., the son of Thomas Johnson and Gertrude Taylor Brawley. He graduated from Gastonia High School in 1948, where he excelled in basketball and football. He was raised a devout Christian and was and very active in the First ARP Church.

He then went on to attend Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. While at Muskingum, he was a basketball team manager and member of the Stag fraternity. He volunteered and entered the Korean War from 1951 to 1954, serving in the US Army. He was a proud member of the 328th Comm/Recon Unit in Bad Aibling, Germany, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He returned to Muskingum and graduated with a BA of Economics in 1955. His senior year he met his future wife Alice Joan Crawford, a member of the Delta Club.

After graduation, Bob went on to a successful career as a product manager with Youngstown Sheet and Tube from 1955 to 1973, living in Dallas, Texas and Youngstown, Ohio. He was President of the Dallas Toastmasters Club. He married Alice in 1957 and they had one daughter, Cindy in 1964. In 1974, Bob moved the family to Houston, Texas where he was employed by Superior Iron Works, and Anglo Energy. In 1984, he formed his own company, Oil Country Investments, an independent tubular sales company. After retiring from the energy business, he worked for Continental Airlines, and Klein Funeral Home.

Bob was a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and participated in the senior choir, Sunday school, and Saints Alive Senior Program. He also participated in many mission trips and was on the visitation team. He was a golfer, and past member of Champions Golf Club. He was an avid Astros and Rockets fan, and also enjoyed reading and travel. In his later years, he moved to Brookdale Assisted Living, where he was an Ambassador and active in all activities.

Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Brawley-Scott (Mike) of Dayton, Texas, and Sister Pat Cummings of New York City, NY. Three granddaughters, Annie Roberts (Blake) of Lubbock, Texas, Shelley Armstrong (Jim Ray), of Coldspring, Texas, and Katie Scott (Reid) of Kemah, Texas. Four great grandchildren, Reid, Grace, Elijah and Ethan. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Eleanor Brawley, brother Thomas Brawley and wife Jean, and ex-wife Alice Crawford Brawley.

Funeral services are under the direction of Klein Funeral Home. Memorial service to be held at Metropolitan Baptist Church Student Building, 12903 Jones Road, Houston, Texas on July 20th at 10:00am.  Future internment at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia, N.C.
