Richard Lee McWhorter

9/7/1944 - 6/29/2024

Richard Lee "Dick" McWhorter passed away peacefully Saturday, June 29, 2024, with his wife Elaine by his side.  He is predeceased by his mother Dorothy McWhorter, stepfather Eddie McWhorter and brother Thomas McWhorter.

Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine; sons Clint McWhorter (Lori) and Derrek McWhorter (Mandy); four grandchildren: Ashton, Noah, Gage and Mia; sisters Deidre Young (James) and Danielle McWhorter; sister and brother-in-law Janice and Tom Hendrix; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dick and Elaine met in 1962 at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg, TX when Dick was a senior and Elaine a freshman. They married on August 5, 1965.

Dick was a United Methodist minister from 1970-1975, serving in Normangee, at Terrace Methodist Church in Houston and in Jones Creek.  He left the ministry in 1975 to become a Licensed Professional Counselor, treating families and assault victims for 33 years.   He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from Sam Houston State University and was the first Ph. D graduate from Prairie View A&M University where he taught family and marriage counseling for 25 years before his retirement in 2022.

Elaine would like to thank Tabitha Green and Wanda Cruz Lawton and the staff of Misty Willow Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for the support and love they gave Dick in his final weeks. It was greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Dick's name to the charity of your choice.
