Obituary

Reverend Alvin William Musgrove, Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior in the early hours of July 26, 2021.  He leaves a legacy of love and service to his congregations and to his family.

Alvin was born on September 15, 1932 in Westfield, Texas to Alvin, Sr. and Leona Musgrove. He was the eldest of 7 children. He graduated from St. John's College, Winfield, Kansas in 1953, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri in 1958.

He married the love of his life, Elva Janyce Sanders, on June 29, 1956.  They welcomed four children into their lives, and also celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2021.

Alvin's life was dedicated to the service of God from a very early age. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor on August 10, 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church in South Dakota.

In his career, he served as pastor for two parishes in South Dakota, Zion Lutheran Church in Andover, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ferney from 1958-1960. He served another dual parish in Texas; Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy and Christ Church in Pattison. He ministered to a congregation in Cypress, Texas at St. John Lutheran Church as associate and then senior pastor beginning in 1969 and retiring in 1997. Alvin also proudly served as a chaplain to the Cy-Fair Fire Department. In the course of his work, he served as spiritual leader, counselor, advisor, teacher, church leader, and friend to countless individuals and families.  The lasting impact of his work is incalculable.

In his free time, Alvin enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with Elva. He enjoyed playing dominoes, fishing, hunting and in later years he spent time writing spiritual books and devotional materials.

Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Earl Henry, and his eldest daughter, Suzan Elizabeth Doty.  He is survived by his wife, Elva, his children Celeste May and husband Donald, Colette Lau, and Jeff Musgrove and wife Cecilia, 8 grandsons, 6 granddaughters and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held for Alvin on August 4, 2021 at 10 am, St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress with a short reception immediately afterwards.  Graveside service will follow, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Westfield, Texas.
