Rebecca Anne Barnes was born May 8, 1940, in Houston, Texas. She passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, cherished memories, and a family who will miss her dearly.
Anne was a graduate of the University of Houston and devoted part of her life to education as a schoolteacher. She had a curious, thoughtful spirit and a lifelong love of reading - especially books about history. She also enjoyed traveling, discovering new places, and creating memories that she treasured throughout her life.
Anne had an incredible sense of wit and a personality all her own. She was never one to hold back what she was thinking, and had a wonderfully honest, unfiltered way of expressing herself. You always knew where you stood with Anne, and her candid observations, quick wit, and unique sense of humor often brought laughter to those around her.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Willys Alden Shaw and Lorraine Holick Shaw; her husband of 56 years, Charles Billy Barnes Sr.; and her daughter, Becky Ann Elbert.
She is survived by her sons, Charles “Billy” Barnes Jr. and his wife, Tena; Brian Alden Barnes and his wife, Kelli; her brother, Willys Shaw; and her sister, Gail Seeliger.
Her grandchildren—Heather Sandine and husband, Matt; Justin Elbert and wife, Jennifer; Brandon Barnes; Jacob Elbert and wife, Brittany; Zackary Barnes and wife, Samantha; Bryce Barnes; Kate Barnes; and Savannah Barnes—held a special place in her heart. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Sage, Lillian, and Judah McLellan; and Benjamin, Emma, Kolby, and Logan Elbert.
To her family, Anne was more than a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother: she was Mammie—a cherished, unforgettable presence whose love, stories, wisdom, humor, and memories will continue to live on through generations.
She had a way of making an impression. Whether through a story from the past, a thoughtful observation, a good book, a travel memory, or a perfectly timed—and sometimes completely unfiltered—comment, Anne had a way of making people laugh and giving them something to remember.
Her love of family, learning, reading, history, and travel reflected the rich and wonderful life she lived. Above all, she leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and lovingly remembered. Her laughter, stories, wisdom, and wonderfully unfiltered spirit will remain in the hearts of her family forever.
