Ray "Butch" Everett Cousins, 82, passed away on August 10, 2026, in Tomball, Texas, leaving behind a lifetime of hard work, love, faith, and devotion to his family.

Ray was born on September 19, 1943, in Houston, Texas, to Fay Everett Cousins and Gladys Matilda Cousins.

For more than 50 years, Ray worked as a land surveyor, a profession that was far more than simply a career to him. Surveying was something he genuinely enjoyed, and his dedication to his work reflected the way he approached life—with determination, purpose, and an unwavering work ethic. After more than half a century in the profession, he eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of work that spanned generations.

Ray was driven and hardworking, but the greatest part of his life was his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather who cared deeply for those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Sherrie Ann Cousins; his children, David Ray Cousins, Rebecca Faye Matthews, John Allen Cousins, Jeff David Gibson, and Christie Lynn Cousins; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fay Everett Cousins, originally from Cleburne County, Arkansas; his mother, Gladys Matilda Cousins, originally from Luling, Texas; and his brother, William Japheth Cousins of Houston, Texas.

When he wasn't working, Ray enjoyed woodworking and working with his hands. Whether he was surveying land, building something in his shop, or spending time with the people he loved, sitting idle simply wasn't his nature.

Those who knew Ray will undoubtedly remember one of his favorite sayings:

"Let's get busy—we're burning daylight!"

Those words captured the man himself. There was work to be done, a day to make the most of, and no reason to waste the daylight you had been given.

Ray believed in God and lived his life as a Christian. His family takes comfort in that faith as they celebrate his life and remember the husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, and friend they loved.

His life cannot be measured simply by the years he lived, but by the family he built, the work he accomplished, the lessons he passed down, and the memories that will continue through the generations of his family.

A life well lived. A family well loved. And never a moment of daylight to waste.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable contributions be made in Ray's memory to The Alzheimer's Institute .
