Ralph Iron Thrasher Jr., affectionately known as "Skipper" to friends, "Doc" to his father, and "Old Goat" to his wife, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2025, in Cypress, Texas, at the age of 76, following complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Born on July 26, 1948, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ralph was the son of Ralph Iron Thrasher Sr. and Mildred Strickland. He was raised in Houston, where he attended Jessie H. Jones High School before continuing his education at the University of Houston.
Ralph built a distinguished career as a Piping Project Designer, a profession that took him around the world to places such as Norway, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, and India. He was admired by colleagues for his meticulous attention to detail and his thoughtful, solution-oriented mindset.
He married the love of his life, Valerie Thrasher, and together they shared 61 years of laughter, growth, and unwavering devotion. They raised two daughters, Tamara and Cherie, and built a large, close-knit family. To his grandchildren —Paul, John, Sarah, Anna, Luke, Remi, and Emma—he was affectionately known as "Poppy", "KMD" or "Grandpa Ralph," and each held a special place in his heart. He now rests in peace, reunited with those who went before him.
Ralph was a man of quiet strength, known for his enduring patience, dry wit, and adventurous spirit. He found joy in simple pleasures—fishing, grilling, golfing, dancing on the back porch with his wife, playing sports, and spending time outdoors. Whether casting a line, walking the green, or sipping coffee with loved ones, Ralph's presence made life richer. A man of devout Christian faith, Ralph was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church and walked in the footsteps of Christ, his calm demeanor and kindness were lasting reflections of the values he held dear.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Iron Thrasher Sr. and Mildred Strickland as well as his Sister Carole Harris (Jim) and grandchildren Enzo Raphael and Ezra Cateni. He is survived by his devoted wife, Valerie; daughters, Cherie Simpson (Bryan), and Tamara Thrasher; grandchildren, Paul, John, Sarah, Anna (Max Underwood), Luke, Remi, and Emma; and great-grandchild Eden. He is also survived by his siblings: Alice Riha ( Ellery), Mary Eva Copeland (Barry Sr.) and Clyde Clifton "Butch" Thrasher (Billy). Many nieces, nephews, and extended family members deeply cherished him.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Klein Funeral Home – Champions. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m., also at Klein Funeral Home. Following the funeral service will be a private burial for the family.
Ralph will be remembered for his gentle humor, boundless patience, and the steadfast love he gave to his family. His legacy of grace, humility, and strength will live on in all who knew and loved him. We imagine him now—sipping coffee and watching golf in heaven, at peace.
