It is with great sadness that the family of Ralph John Reichert announces his passing on January 9, 2019, at the age of 99 years and 8 months.
Born in Spring Texas on May 14,1919, Ralph grew up the son of a railroader and
dairy farmer. As a young man he was up early tending the farm where he learned the
meaning of hard work. His first real job off the farm was an Orange Crush delivery
driver where he drove a daily route between the Tri-Cities of Beaumont, Orange and
Port Arthur.
In 1942, Ralph enlisted in the Army, served 4 years and experienced active duty in the South Pacific Theatre with Company G, of the 129th Infantry. Constantly on the move with his company, pushing forward through mosquito-infested rivers and streams fighting the elements as well as the enemy snipers, they made their way through the Solomon Islands of Guadalcanal and Bougainville and on up to the Philippines as part of a task force attacking Manila. Twice afflicted by Malaria, Ralph also contracted Dengue, a deadly infectious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes.
By 1946, Ralph had ended his stint in the army and met the love of his life, Elsie Woodson. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in 1947. Ralph and Elsie soon had four children, two girls and two boys. He worked hard to support his family with an entrepreneurial drive which included ownership of the Blue Front service station and owner and operator of two restaurants, notably the Dairy Mart which was a landmark restaurant in Spring Texas for locals in the 70's.
Ralph was a wonderful husband and father, he enjoyed a good life with his family. Ralph will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Elsie and his children, Carolyn and husband Ben, Larry and wife Christine, Brenda and husband Steve, and Chris and wife Brenda. He will also be fondly remember by his 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
