Peggy O'Neal Stephens entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on September 1, 2026, at the age of 83. She was born on December 4, 1942, in Lucedale, Mississippi, to Viron and Nora Strickland.
Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Harry "Tom" Stephens; her parents; and her two sisters, Dale and Brenda, with whom she is now reunited in Heaven.
Peggy's life began as a testament to God's grace and perseverance. Born prematurely and weighing only about five pounds, she was not expected to survive. Her family kept her warm beside a wood-burning stove, and against all odds she grew into a strong, resilient woman. She often shared stories of her humble childhood in Lucedale, recalling difficult times when families made do with flower-sack undergarments and dresses. These early experiences helped shape the hardworking, grateful spirit that characterized her throughout her life.
At the age of 15, Peggy's family moved to Houston, Texas. There she attended Stephen F. Austin High School and met the love of her life, Harry "Tom" Stephens. Their love story began in high school and led to marriage on April 13, 1962. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and adventure. Peggy and Tom enjoyed many years traveling, camping, and fishing, creating cherished memories until Tom's passing on April 22, 2009.
Throughout her life, Peggy worked in several occupations, but one of her greatest joys came from her career with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. She began her service on December 14, 1991, in the Inmate Processing Center, working in Booking and Releasing. She later transferred to the Bonding Division, where she continued to serve with dedication, professionalism, and compassion. Peggy treasured her years with HCSO and formed many lifelong friendships with colleagues who became like family. She eventually retired to devote herself to caring for her beloved husband during his illness, a final act that reflected her unwavering love and devotion.
Above all else, Peggy loved her family. She was a devoted mother, proud grandmother, and adoring great-grandmother. She leaves behind her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Lisa Stephens, and Geary and Donna Stephens; her treasured grandchildren, Dylan, Joel, and Alexis; and her precious great-grandson, Bowen. Her family was the center of her world, and she found great joy in every milestone, gathering, and moment spent with them.
Peggy will be remembered for her strength, kindness, faith, sense of humor, and deep love for those around her. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched throughout her journey. While she will be deeply missed, her loved ones find comfort in knowing she is at peace, reunited with those who went before her, and forever in the presence of the Lord.
