Peggy Hoover (née Steele) died in her home on Saturday June 3, 2017 in Cypress, Texas due to complications following metastatic melanoma. She was 84.

Peggy was born on December 17, 1932 in Brumley, Texas to her parents, Bernice and Homer Steele. She graduated from East Texas State University with a degree in Elementary Education in 1954. After striking out on her own in Port Arthur, she returned to Tyler, where she met and married Hank Hoover in 1958. The young family moved frequently throughout the south, following Hank's job with the civilian corps of engineers attached to the fledgling space program. In 1970, Hank, Peggy and their four children settled in Cypress, Texas, where she taught elementary and middle school reading for 28 years, earning a masters degree in education, just three hours short of a PhD. She raised four kids in Enchanted Valley, passionately supporting her children at Little League baseball games, softball practices, swim meets and basketball tournaments.    She retired in 1994 and the couple returned to rural East Texas for the peace and quiet of country living.

Peggy was a patient and supportive teacher with a passion for literacy. She worked with dear friend Wanda Jowell to implement the Gifted and Talented Program in the Cypress –Fairbanks ISD, and was justly proud of her work in securing a grant to install computers in the classroom at Labay Middle School, long before they were standard equipment. She was a member of the faculty at two nationally recognized blue-ribbon schools and was a passionate supporter of public education. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hoover and son-in-law, Ted Combs and daughter Jenny Combs Alston; her sons, Gary Hoover and daughter-in-law June, grandsons Henry and Harry; son, Jim Hoover and grandchildren Sara and Kurtis, and her sister Guinetta Little  of Greenville, Texas.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Hank, her sister, Neva Tillery; and her son, Bill Hoover.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10 AM in the Chapel of Klein Funeral Home – CyFair. Interment will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in Simpsonville Cemetery in Gilmer, Texas.
