Ottis Mellie Young, Jr., 80, entered the Kingdom of Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 10, 2020. He was born in Pasadena, Texas on June 30, 1940, to Ottis Young, Sr. and Dorothy (Simon) Young.

Ottis grew up in Golden Acres and attended Pasadena High School. He was the President of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) and graduated in 1958. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and attended Galena Park Missionary Baptist Church with his family. A church his father helped to build. Galena Park is where he began teaching Sunday School at the age of 18, and also began to help out leading the singing. In August, 1960, he met his future bride, Joan Lanelle Bell. They were married on January 20, 1962, and not long after bought their first home in Jacinto City, where they lived and raised their 4 children, surrounded by wonderful neighbors, until 1997.

For many years Ottis was a teacher, deacon, and song leader at Galena Park Missionary Baptist and later at Channelview Missionary Baptist. In 1996, Ottis and Joan built a house in Magnolia, Texas, and soon found their last church home at Christchurch Baptist Fellowship, formerly known as Prestonwood Baptist Church, where Ottis continued to serve as a deacon and teacher.

Ottis was a talented and skilled machinist. He worked at Dell Machine for 19 years before he moved on to the Reynolds Can Plant in Houston, where he worked another 20 years until the plant closed in 1997. After that, he worked at various machine shops around the Magnolia, Tomball, and Spring areas, until he finished out his career as a machinist, retiring (for the 6th time) from Strackbein Machine Co. in Tomball.

Ottis was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman. He spent many years on his deer lease in Huntsville hunting for deer, duck, and other wild game, as well as fishing on the Trinity River, and various ponds, for catfish, bass and whatever else appeared on the line. Those were relaxing and exciting times.

Ottis was known for many things, but what he will be known for most was his love for the Lord and singing. Over the years, God used Ottis to reach the hearts of many through his lessons, songs, service, prayers, and just conversation, to lead people to the Lord and to discover for themselves the joy in finding that personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He was a storyteller, but boy, did he love a good object lesson. It didn't matter how many times he showed you or told the same story or lesson, he always told it with excitement and newness, like it was the first time. Ottis was a giver. He gave his money, time, love, and encouragement to others whenever he could, to show the love of God. That's just who he was. His legacy was service to the Lord and family. Ottis was a good and faithful servant.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy & Ottis Young, Sr.; son, Stephen; sister, Doris Black; brother, Phillip Young; sister, Wynelle Clark; and former daughter-in-law, Susan (Hale) Young. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan (Bell) Young; his children, Hugh Young, Keith & Cheryl Young, Scott Young, and Sheryl & Mark Kasella; his grandchildren, Joshua and Madison Young and Jacob Young; Logan, Tristan, Ryan, and Denton Young; Taylor Arbour, Kailey Broadway, Ethan and Angie Young; Stephen and Andrew Kasella; great-grandchildren, Imogen Perez and Houston Carroll; his brother Melvin Young and wife Delories; his sister, Tricia Fullen and husband Mike; sister-in-law, Lena Faye Renfro; former daughters-in-law, Donna (La Cour) Sutton and Michelle (Shannon) Young; and many wonderful nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

There will be no Visitation Services. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2020, for family relations only, at Christchurch Baptist Fellowship, 12501 Champion Forest Dr., Houston, TX 77066 at 10:30 a.m. and will be laid to rest at Klein Memorial Park-Magnolia-The Woodlands. Masks and social distancing will be required, and we are requesting that there will be no hugging, as hard as that may be. The entire service will be live-streamed beginning at 9:30 a.m. for those who cannot attend.
