In Memoriam: Niels C. Nielsen (1943-2024)

Niels C. Nielsen, aged 80, of Montgomery, Texas, passed away on November 8, 2024. He was born on December 16, 1943, in Irvington, New Jersey, to the late Heinrich "Tex" Nielsen and Maureen (Furey) Nielsen. He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie (Johnston) Nielsen, and his children JP Nielsen and Matthew Nielsen, along with their wives Taryn and Lauren, and his cherished grandchildren, Peyton and Blake Nielsen.

Niels was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sara Maureen Nielsen, and his brother, Norman Nielsen.

Though a New Jersey native, Niels embraced the spirit of Louisiana after moving there in the mid-1970s. He developed a passion for Cajun culture, relishing in the art of storytelling and the joy of cooking. He cherished lively crawfish boils and found great pleasure in hunting and fishing, immersing himself in the rich traditions of his adopted home.

A skilled fixed-wing and rotor-wing pilot, Niels' adventurous spirit took him on many exciting journeys over the years. His career brought him to Texas in the late 1980s, where he honed his barbecue skills, particularly perfecting his famous brisket. After retiring, he found joy in scouting, hunting, and spending quality time with his sons on their property in Centerville, Texas. It was there that he truly appreciated the beauty of nature and the simplicity of life. He lived a quiet life with a few close friends.

Niels' legacy of love, adventure, and family will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, but his stories and cooking will forever be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held on November 18, 2024 at 10:30 AM, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 8227 County Road 205, Plantersville, Texas, 77373. Interment immediately following at St. Mary's Cemetery.
