Newal Hunter, Jr. departed this life on December 2, 2025 at the age of 72. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Houston, Texas. Newal was the proud son of the late Newal Hunter, Sr. and Dorothy Lee Jones Hunter. He was also preceded in death by brothers Raymond Hunter, Sr., Aubrey Hunter, Sr., and Michael Hunter.
A proud 20-year U.S. Army veteran, Newal continued his commitment to service as a higher education administrator and as the owner of Classic Cakes and Catering. He attended Grambling State University, where he played football, and later earned his master's degree from Central Michigan University and doctorate from Spalding University.
Newal was a devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather whose warmth, humor, and steady presence enriched every life he touched. He is survived by his wife, Marvalette; his children Newal Hunter III, Katerina Wingfield (Nakia), Austin Hunter, and Victoria Hunter; and grandchildren Jaylon Wingfield, Myles Wingfield, Nicholas Hunter, and Aliya Hunter . He also leaves his brothers Dwight Hunter (Sandra) and Avery Hunter, Sr.; sister Bridgett Hunter; sister-in-laws; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Masonic Order, and a faithful member of Fallbrook Church.
Newal will be remembered for his faith, generosity, leadership, and enduring love for his family and community.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 19th at Fallbrook Church, 12512 Walters Rd., Houston, TX 77014. Viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the celebration service at 11:00 a.m. and a reception immediately afterward. Interment: Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038. Services are entrusted to Klein Funeral Home and Fallbrook Church, with Pastor Olus R. Holder, Jr. officiating and Pastor Michael Pender, Sr. delivering the eulogy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Newal's memory to Houston Food Bank.
