Nancy Elizabeth Davis Wheat died in her home on Sunday, February 18, 2018 in Houston, TX due to complications from pneumonia.  She was 92.

Nancy was born on December 6, 1925 in Leesville, LA to her parents, William Jennings Davis and Thelma Georgia Murphey Davis. She was the second of three children born to Jennings and Thelma.  Nancy attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, TX before transferring to Sam Houston State Teachers College (now Sam Houston State University), where she graduated with a degree in Education.  After graduation, she taught briefly in Bracketville, TX before moving to Tomball, TX, where her parents lived and where she taught for several years.

Nancy met the love of her life at a church picnic in Tomball, and after a short courtship, she married Tillman Lorenzo "Buck" Wheat, Jr. on March 18, 1949 in Camden, TX.  After living and working in several cities near the Texas Gulf Coast, Nancy and Buck moved the family to Houston, TX in 1958.  Nancy spent most of her teaching career in the Spring Branch ISD and the Cypress Fairbanks ISD, where she taught first grade.  Nancy retired from teaching in 1981, and she enjoyed her life in retirement with Buck for more than 35 years.  Through her working career and most of her retired life, she was an active member at Long Point Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir for many years.  She later joined the Cypress Creek Baptist Church.  In retirement, she enjoyed short road trips around Texas with Buck, particularly trips to Brenham, TX during bluebonnet season.  She also cherished spending time with the family, especially with her four beloved grandchildren.

As she was with her family, Nancy was a nurturing teacher for her students, and she helped make learning fun for her classes.  She had well developed skills in art, and she created most of her teaching aids herself, in an era where the Internet was not available to leverage for education materials production.  Even by conservative estimates, Nancy educated about 600-700 students in her 25-year career as a Primary Education teacher.  The parents of many prospective students asked for her by name, particularly those parents who had an older child educated by Nancy.  These requests are a testament to the mastery of her craft, and the value that Nancy brought to lives of so many children in their formative years.  She always said that teaching was not really like a job, since it gave her such pleasure and enjoyment.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Tillman Lorenzo "Buck" Wheat, Jr., her father and mother, William Jennings Davis and Thelma Georgia Murphey Davis, her sister and brother-in-law, Juanda Violet Spell and Raymond D Spell, her sister-in-law Earline Tatum Davis, all her Davis aunts and uncles.

Nancy is survived by her brother, Donald Rand Davis, her son and his fiancée Tillman L Wheat III and Ruth McGurdy, her son William M Wheat and his wife Ada, her granddaughter (and namesake) Rachel Elizabeth Lepchitz and her husband David, her granddaughter Georgia Paige Wheat, her grandson Joshua Adam Wheat and his wife Mallory, her grandson Michael Zachary Wheat and his wife Samantha, her great grandsons Austin Michael Lepchitz and Barrett Allen Wheat, her niece Annelia Margaret Williams, her niece (and namesake) Jo Nancy Neal and husband Dwayne, her nephew Donald Rand Davis, Jr. and his wife Dee, and her cousins Mary McCutcheon and Joann Davis Rogers.  She loved all members of her family dearly, and she was loved by all.

Nancy's life will be celebrated on Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Klein Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 9714 FM 2920 in Tomball, TX.  Visitation will be from 1-2PM CST, and the Service will begin at 2PM.  Interment will immediately follow the Service.  Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate Nancy's life.
