Obituary

Nancy Lee Cobourn Shaughnessy, 83, peacefully passed away at home in Houston, TX on February 2, 2025. Born on October 9, 1941, in Havre de Grace, Harford County, Maryland, to George "Howlett" and Eleanor Cobourn, she was an only child and spent her early years in the river town of Havre de Grace. Her fondest memories were of her lifelong friendships and cherished time in this small town on the Chesapeake Bay.

Nancy was known for her adventurous spirit, athleticism, and independence throughout her life. As a young girl, she was a champion Steeplechase rider, winning numerous Maryland state contests aboard her beloved black thoroughbred, "Princess." Later in life, she traveled the world, visiting every continent, living overseas in Panama and Indonesia, and trails less traveled specifically in Sulawesi and Irian Jaya. A passionate tennis player, she was known for her ability to slam a ball with the best of them, often playing doubles with women half her age. No matter where her travels took her, she always returned to Havre de Grace for visits.

Nancy's greatest devotion was to her family, which she nurtured with unwavering faith, strength, and love. She lovingly raised two children and often hosted family gatherings, creating cherished traditions centered around togetherness. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and extended family was evident in the memories she created through parties, games, outings, and shared moments of reading and connection. Her lessons, wisdom, and love will be her lasting legacy.

In North Houston, where she and her husband Walt settled, they became active members of their church community, finding joy and fulfillment in their faith and service to others. She was part of the group that created the stained-glass windows in the chapel, loved helping with the Annual Garage Sale, and supported Senior Friends. Nancy's strength, grace, and warmth touched all who knew her.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, George Howlett Cobourn and Eleanor Ward Cobourn. She is survived by her husband, Walter Francis Shaughnessy, Jr. of Houston, TX; two children Stacy Elizabeth Brown Park and her husband, Harold, of Union, KY; Kurt Cobourn Brown and his wife, Vina, of Spring, TX; four grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Park of Union, KY and Harper and Hayden Brown of Spring, TX and a wide circle of friends and family who will forever remember her as a beacon of love and strength.

Family and friends are deeply grateful for the support and love they received during her brief illness.

A visitation will be held at 10am following a mass of Christian burial at 10:30am at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church in Spring, TX. A private burial is planned at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, TX.
