Nancy Johnson, a loving wife and mother of two, passed away on September 23, 2024 in her home with her husband Charles at her side.

Nancy was born to Gilbert and Guadalupe Garza on December 6, 1957 in Mercedes, Texas. Her immediate family consisted of three sisters and six brothers, with some being born in Texas, others in California and one in Michigan.  They attended seven different elementary schools and didn't establish semi-permeance in Houston until the mid '60s.  Even though the family had no roots to call home, they had each other.  Nancy being the fifth child, she watched over the younger kids as chaperon, ring leader, and defender.  She would often grab the younger Garzas and lead them to play at the park or occasionally, on a scavenger hunt looking for bottles with deposit returns.  They would make the long trek to a convenience store to sell the bottles after which, they would split a soda and candy bar.  Once, on a trip to the pool at a nearby park,  she improvised swim caps for the girls by wrapping their hair in saran wrap and bobby pins to met swim cap requirements for their long hair.

Nancy never completed a formal education but instead, had street smarts.  She referred to this often as "Old School" learning.  Her experience raising her younger siblings led her into a career as a nanny.  She worked for several local prominent families, and was often called "Nanny 911" in that she could get the kids to behave when the parents had all but given up.  She was so well loved, that she was offered opportunities to move to San Francisco and Moscow when her families moved due to job transfers.  She never accepted these moves because she never wanted to move away from her family.  Although Nancy felt this was not a worthy career field, the families that she worked for would all testify that she made a positive lifelong change in their children's lives.

Nancy struggled to provide a better life for her daughter, Michelle and was invited to Faith Assembly church where she assisted with the children's' program.  She later joined the singles program where she met Charles, her husband of 29 years.  At first, neither Nancy nor Charles liked each other, however Michelle reintroduced them and they eventually fell in love.  Several years after getting married, they had their second daughter, Savannah.

Nancy had a unique way of loving people.  She could be blunt and unfiltered but was always consistent and usually right.  She used few words but was fiercely loyal and a true lioness.  If she perceived that someone she loved was wronged, she'd fight to make things right.  When her ailing mother or younger brother Freddy needed assistance, Nancy took on the bureaucracy to get them all the benefits they deserved.  She never backed down from a fight.

Nancy is survived by her husband Charles Johnson, daughters Michelle Lindsey and Savannah Johnson, and grandkids Bryce Lindsey and Ava Lindsey.  Nancy is also survived by siblings: Hilda Chabolla, Gilbert Garza, Roy Garza, Alma Ridgway, Alfredo Garza, Andy Garza, Vanessa Rodriguez, and Ismael Garza.
