Obituary

Michael David Rhodes, 60, of Cypress, Texas, passed away on August 12, 2026. He was born in Houston on December 30, 1965, to Mike and Jeanette Rhodes.

Mike grew up in Houston and graduated from Aldine High School in 1984. A gifted, multi-talented athlete, he played football and baseball at the University of Houston before the New York Yankees organization drafted him in 1988. He married the love of his life, Cheryl, in 1992 and later earned his degree from UH. Mike recently celebrated 25 years with Chubb Corporation, where he served as Senior Vice President, Global Client Executive. Widely respected by colleagues, he built relationships with clients across the country. Mike never met a stranger and never had an unkind word for anyone. His genuine and generous nature made him an inspiration to everyone he crossed paths with.

Mike was deeply devoted to his Christian Faith. He and Cheryl attended the same church as children at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, where Mike served as an altar server. Throughout their 34-year marriage, they remained active in the Faith community of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church and enjoyed serving as Mentors to engaged couples preparing for marriage. He also has been a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for over 25 years.

Mike loved fishing, hunting, sports, grilling, spending time in Galveston, and cheering for the Houston Cougars! His proudest moments included the births of his beloved daughters, who he loved to spoil. He took great pride in their Faith, careers, and families, and cherished being “Poppy” to his granddaughter. Throughout his life, Mike also adored his dogs, Jax and Shiner, and always considered them members of the family. Beyond being a devoted husband, father, son, and brother, Mike was also such a supportive and present uncle to his nieces and nephews, randomly showing up to sporting events and performances to cheer them on!

Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Cheryl Rhodes; his daughters, Courtney Steppe and her husband, Jason, and Kayla Stumbaugh and her husband, Trent; and his beloved granddaughter, Skylar. He is also survived by his mother, Jeanette Rhodes; his siblings, Vicki Hogue and her husband, Marshall, Mark Rhodes and his wife, Teri, and Terri Amarca; his parents-in-law, Marie and Clem Laskowski; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Dannette Burnett; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Terry Michael Rhodes, and his niece, Bailey Jean Rhodes.
