Michael Goy Pettey

Mike Pettey went home to be with the Lord on March 2, 2024. He was 78 years old.

Michael Goy Pettey was born on June 1, 1945, to G.C. and Mildred Ellis Pettey in Dallas, TX. After graduating from Kimball High School in 1963, he graduated from UT Arlington in 1967 with a degree in Math.

At a New Year's Eve party in 1967, Ann Pollock caught Mike's eye, and they began dating soon thereafter. In 1970, Mike and Ann were married in Dallas and had three children – Reagan, Parrish and Cherrish.

He worked at The Texas Bank part-time during college and went to work in the bank's Trust Department full-time after graduating. He was the youngest Trust Officer at the bank when he left in 1976 and followed his brother G.C. to Houston. In 1978, he founded Custom Benefit Services which later became Alliance Benefit Group, a large regional company that served corporate retirement plans. He never fully retired and served as President at the time of his death. When asked what he was up to, he quipped, "I'm not fully retired, but I don't work very much."

He was revered by employees and respected by clients. He was considered a nice guy by everyone except referees, umpires and people who drive in the passing lane.

He was a good storyteller with a great smile. He was compassionate, forgiving, and happiest with his family. Known as Pops to his grandchildren, he proudly told his kids that his grandchildren would never hear "No' when staying at his house. When he wasn't spoiling his grandkids, he enjoyed old western movies, old country music and old Rockford Files reruns.

An avid sports fan, Mike was a Dallas Cowboys season ticket holder. He loved the Cowboys until the day they fired Tom Landry. His passion waned afterwards, but he never stopped following them. His commitment to Texas Longhorn football never waned and to him there was no offseason. He enjoyed coaching his children in all youth sports and rarely missed a game.

Mike was proud of his Choctaw roots and was a card-carrying member of the tribe. As a young father, he often put his children to bed with Hardy Boys books and tales of "growing up as a little Indian on the reservation."

Mike was a lifelong Christian, and his faith only grew over the years. He was a devoted member of Klein United Methodist Church for over 40 years. He served on a variety of committees and especially loved the Seekers Sunday School class. Mike attended Bible

Study Fellowship for over twenty years, an organization that was instrumental to his faith journey.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, G.C. and Mildred Pettey, his wife of 53 years, Ann, his brother, G.C., his sister Jean Chambers, and his grandson Thatcher Ray Helmig.

Mike is survived by his son Reagan (Amye), son Parrish (Amanda), daughter Cherrish (Thad), grandchildren Emerson Pettey, Lily Pettey, Georgia Pettey, Holden Helmig, Hartley Helmig, Hawkins Helmig, and his sister-in-law Becky Anderson.

Mike's family is especially grateful to Sonia, Lena, Erma, Coral, Emily and George, who lovingly cared for Mike during the last years of his life.
