Obituary

Michael Scott Maddox

July 23, 1953 – September 28, 2019

Mike was born into a baseball family and it was natural that he would devote his life to the sport he loved passionately.  His coaching career began at Bellaire High School where he coached for one year. He then moved on to his alma mater, St. Pius X High School, to become Head Baseball Coach for two years. Mike then coached at C E King High School for one year.  His longest and most memorable coaching position was at Jersey Village High School where he was Head Coach for 28 years. During his tenure he was able to coach both of his sons.  At Jersey Village his teams won or shared the District Championship seven times and participated nine times in the Bi-District Playoffs. They reached the regional quarter finals three times, Regional Semi-Finals two times, and had one regional finals appearance. He was named District Coach of the Year nine times. He was installed into the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association in 2009.  When he was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018 he humbly accepted on behalf of all his players, teams, and coaches.  One of the things he loved most about being a coach was his ability to instill life-long values on a professional and personal level.  He was a master storyteller who loved giving post-game dugout "chats".  So many of his players in later years became family to him.

As much as he loved and embraced his coaching career, his wife and boys were his "home plate".  Mike met the love of his life as a freshman in high school. Mike and Dale married shortly after they graduated college.  Together they raised two loving sons; Jarrad and Zachary.  As a father, he took pride in watching both boys carry on the Maddox baseball tradition as players and coaches.  Outside of baseball he enjoyed raising his Labrador Retrievers: Cisco, Max, Kasey, Macey and Scooter.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Delma Lee and Rosemary Maddox, and brothers Lee Maddox and Phil Maddox. He leaves behind his loving wife of 44 years Dale Maddox, sons Jarrad Maddox and Zach Maddox and wife Jen, his brother David Maddox and wife Joanna, sister Tina Maddox, sister-in-laws Katherine Maddox and Scotty Maddox  and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
