Michael John "Mickey" Griffin, Jr. 87, of Houston went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 1, 2018 in Houston, Texas surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was born April 24, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA., the oldest child of five to Michael John and Margaret Murphy Griffin. He grew up in Philadelphia and after graduating from high school served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Michael married Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Boyle Griffin of Philadelphia PA on June 28, 1958 and they have shared 60 wonderful years of marriage and team work together. During their first years of marriage, they both worked during the day and Michael went to night school and earned his degree in Accounting all while having and raising their three children, Michael, Betty Ann and Linda.
Michael worked for Kewanee Oil which later merged with Chevron Corporation. After the merger, the family moved to Houston, Texas. Michael worked for Chevron for many years as a tax accountant and then took a job with the Shell Corporation until his retirement. Of course Michael never really retired. He handled all the tax preparation for Betty's business, Scruples Boutique, and for his children and their families throughout his life. Betty and Michael continued their team work forming Roman Builders for the purpose of building their dream home in Champions. Betty designed the home while Michael was the general contractor. Their home provided many warm memories for their entire family. When not enjoying the paddle boat and views on the lake in their backyard, they spent many wonderful holidays celebrating with their children and grandchildren at their home away from home in Galveston, Texas. Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather who devoted his life to his family.
During his life time he was affiliated with and a member of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Houston, Texas chapters of TEI (Tax Executive Institute). He was a strong supporter of Roman Catholic High School and was very involved in its continued success. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, traveling, and cooking amazing meals. He and Betty enjoyed many fun gatherings with friends and family through their memberships at Champions Golf Club, Northgate Country Club and Raveneaux Country Club. Michael and Betty also had wonderful times with their friends and neighbors in the Champion Women's Wine Group.
Michael was a man of great faith and a member of St. Ignatius Community Catholic Church. His life and love, character, strength and faith will live on in our hearts forever and we will dearly miss him!
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, James F. (Jim) Griffin, Joseph (Joe) P. Griffin and Edward (Eddie) C. Griffin; and his sister-in-laws, Joan Griffin, and Mary Ober.
