Obituary

The Life of Mercedes Jackson as I know.

Mercedes Ann Jackson, 84, passed away November 29, 2024. She was born August 21, 1940, in Houston, TX to the late Delia Mae (Hildabridle) and McDurwood Jackson.

After her Grand Mother passed, Mercedes went to live in the Cullen Center. The Cullen Center offered specialized programs designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents, focusing on life skills, therapeutic interventions, and recreational activities.

While at the Cullen Center Mercedes participated in Girl Scouts of America, bowling, the special Olympics, Saturday Night dances with her boyfriend Michael Black. She worked in the Centers workshop boxing sugar for Imperial Sugar and packaging volleyballs, soccer balls and basketballs for Voit. She also enjoyed going to the Houston Livestock and Rodeo, movies, and various other activities for the Cullen residents. One of her favorite events was a trip to Disney World. Later on she moved to the Willow River Farms, a rural community offering vocational training and semi-independent living. Due to her health, she then moved to Gulf Pointe Plaza Nursing Home in Rockport Texas close to her sister and brother-in-law. She later relocated to Focused Care at Brenham Nursing Home after hurricane Harvey and was close to her cousin Pam. Later she moved to Cambridge Health & Rehabilitation Center until her passing.

Mercedes made an impression on everyone she met with her standard saying "Thank You Very Much". An example of her likability, her and her best friend Bonnie use to walk over the River Oaks Backstreet café to get coffee (always free provided by the owners) we had a few birthday parties for Mercedes at Backstreet and one-year Backstreet had a contest for a free dinner with Limousine service to and from the café, it turned out Mercedes and Bonnie won the contest (rigged?) The CNA's at Cambridge thought kindly of her as another example of her lasting impression.

There are many other family occasions, events, and memories that we shared with Merk (her family nickname). God Bless her soul!

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in her name to the Houston Humane Society.
