Mary Van Benton's Obituary
Mary Van Sparrow Benton, age 88, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Walter Braxton Benton, passed away on May 24, 2017 while on hospice care at her daughter's home in Spring, Texas.
Born on July 19, 1928 in Johnson City, New York, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Cassie Sparrow.
Mary graduated from Johnson City High School in 1947. She received a degree from State University of New York at Delhi in Food Service Administration in 1950. She worked for IBM in Endicott, New York until she married her husband, the late Walter Braxton Benton on May 18, 1953 in Mississippi. They relocated to Savannah, Georgia shortly after they were united in marriage.
Mary devoted her life to her late husband and family. She was married to Walter for 56 years before he passed away in 2009.
Mary was a gentle, loving soul and always had a smile on her face. She was kind-hearted and loving to everyone she met. She always placed others first and demonstrated this through her charitable donations and time she spent helping others. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, traveling, attending NARFE meetings and spending time with her friends and family. She was a strong and independent woman. She loved life and fought hard at the end when she was ill. She was a steel magnolia. She will never be forgotten and will be missed until we are reunited again with her in Heaven.
Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Dora Sparrow, her parents Frederick and Cassie Sparrow and her husband Walter Braxton Benton.
Surviving are her two sons, Frederick Benton of Duluth, Georgia; Richard Benton of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Vanessa Benton Clem and husband Michael Clem of Spring, Texas; four grandchildren, Chris Benton, Melissa Benton Boggs and husband Bryan Boggs, Michael Clem II and Ryan Clem; three great grandchildren, Cynthia Benton, John Benton, Camden Boggs and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was laid to rest in Klein Memorial Park in Tomball, Texas on May 30, 2017 at 3pm. Funeral arrangements were handled by Klein Funeral Home in Spring, Texas.
