Marvin Zatopek

1948 – 2020

Marvin Zatopek, age 71, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 22nd.

Marvin was born to August Zatopek, Jr and Lillie Trojcak Zatopek on July 25, 1948 in Moulton, TX. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy Zatopek as well as four children: Angie Zatopek Smith and husband Scott, Chris Zatopek and wife Nicole, Kerry Divin and wife Michelle, Shannon Divin and wife Brandy. Marvin is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Sara Smith, Blake Smith, Megan Zatopek, Matthew Zatopek, Justin Divin, Dylan Divin, Cameron Divin and Hadley Divin. Marvin's sister, Delores Shely and husband Warren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and dear friends are also left to share wonderful memories of Marvin.

Marvin graduated from Moulton High School in 1966 and immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He trained as a 0311 Rifleman and was discharged from active duty in 1969 as an E5 Sergeant. Marvin proudly served his country as a member of Company "A, 1st"/9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division aka The Walking Dead during his Tour of Duty in Vietnam. He served with distinction and honor, participating in 4 major combat operations during the Battle at Khe Sanh. He was awarded the following commendations during his service: Purple Heart Medal w/ Star, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat "V", Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action National Defense Service Medal, Combat Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. When Marvin returned home from active duty, he started his career with Cameron Iron Works and he retired from the United States Post Office in 2010.

Marvin was an active member of the VVA Chapter 870 out of Schulenburg, TX. He was also a proud member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 30 years where he received the Glazer Award for his hard work, dedication and service.

Marvin was the life of the party wherever he landed. He enjoyed a good time with his family and friends and it was not unusual to hear him say "The more the merrier!" and hear him singing his favorite song "Oh Lord It's Hard To Be Humble…". He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He treasured the yearly gatherings to make sausage as well as his time in the country with his family. He also enjoyed many trips, far and wide, with his beloved wife, Nancy. He loved his John Deere tractor, Polka music, riding his Polaris Ranger, checking on the deer and wild turkeys and his cabin in the woods.

Due to the current pandemic restrictions, there will be no visitation. Graveside burial will be held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery because of the restrictions, the service will be limited to immediate family.

When the restrictions are lifted, there will be a graveside service with Military Funeral Honors followed by a Celebration of Life. Both will take place at a later date with more details to follow.
