Martin James Flanagan

August 16, 1941 – April 10, 2021

Born in New York City in August 1941 to Irish immigrant parents, Martin James Flanagan was raised in the Bronx in a one-bedroom apartment on Bainbridge Avenue. His Catholic school upbringing and devotion to his faith led him to Fordham University where he graduated in 1963. When Marty met Eileen at Rockaway Beach in the Summer of 1960, it was love at first sight. They married in '64. He served in the National Guard at Ft. Dix while beginning his 37-year career with Exxon. In 1967, Marty was transferred to Texas where he would lay down roots and start a family in the suburbs of Houston's west side. Although he left the Bronx, the Bronx never left him. Marty's strong accent and larger than life personality attracted many friends throughout his great life. While raising three children, Marty was active in the community, neighborhood and church. He loved coaching baseball at Memorial Ashford Little League, volunteering at St. John Vianney church, rooting for the Astros (and Yankees) and golfing. Marty retired from Exxon in 1999 and turned his full attention to being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. After a brief illness, Marty received last rites from his parish priest and passed away peacefully at their home in Spring, Texas in the arms of loved ones. Marty was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joanne. He is survived by his loving wife Eileen, his children, Andrew, Christine, and Matthew, their spouses, Niki, Jay and Andrea and grandchildren, Grayson, Caleb, Erin, Lindsey, Kyle, Nicole, Robert, and Madison.
