Martha McEvoy Pope, 74, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2021, in Houston.

Martha is survived by her spouse, David Bruce Pope; her daughter Katharine and son-in-law Justin Foley of Rockwall, Texas; her son John Brandon and daughter-in-law Nicole Pope of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren Abigail ("Abby"), Alexander ("Xander"), Benjamin ("Ben"), Alexander ("Alex"), and Theodore ("Teddy"); her brother Webster and sister-in-law Patsy; her brother-in-law Bryan and sister-in-law Denice; nieces Jordan and Joanna; and nephews Jonathan, Bryce, and Clark. She is preceded in death by her mother Franke and father Webster McEvoy Jr.

Martha was born in Liberty, Texas, to Franke and Webster McEvoy Jr. on July 9, 1946. She attended Pasadena High School and graduated in 1964. She went on to be the third woman to earn a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Texas Tech University. Martha worked as a middle and high school math teacher for both the Pasadena School District and the Midland School District in Texas. She also worked for private schools and provided individual tutoring. In addition to working and taking care of her family, Martha spent her time going to church, volunteering, attending school functions, and crafting.

In Midland, Martha attended First United Methodist with her family, where she participated in the handbell choir. Martha served in several capacities for the charity formerly known as the Midland Children's Service League. She served as the charity's President and also as the chair of the Beefeaters Ball and Cattle Auction, the annual fundraiser for the Cerebral Palsy Center. She participated with the Law Wives Association; she was also initiated into the sisterhood of P.E.O in 1982 and served on the board. She volunteered as a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts of America and also volunteered with the Girl Scouts.

In Denver, Martha and her family attended Hope United Methodist. She supported the Smoky Hill High School band. Martha also worked as a Weight Watchers motivational speaker and group leader and for a financial advisor.

Martha and Bruce returned to Houston, Texas, in 2000. They have been members of the John Wesley United Methodist Church, where Martha participated in the handbell choir. Martha had been very active in Chapter ES of P.E.O., both as a member and in several positions, including Treasurer and President (2012–2014). More recently, she was a champion of Cards; P.E.O. has appreciated her specially-crafted, personalized birthday, sympathy, and get well cards.

Martha always had an affinity for numbers. She was as feared an opponent over the card table as she was a desired companion in shopping expeditions. She played bridge everywhere she lived.

The funeral service will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church on April 6, 2021. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., and the funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Dunbar will officiate the ceremony. Klein Funeral Home (Champions) is handling the funeral arrangements.
