Obituary

After battling a life-long, immune-deficiency disorder, Mark Sokol, 16, of Kingwood, Texas died on October 8, 2020. Mark passed away at his home surrounded by his parents, Ron and Margaret Sokol, and brother Thomas Sokol. Mark was born on August 30, 2004, in Houston, Texas. Along with his parents and brother, Mark is survived by his aunt, Connie Berger, first cousin Kyle (Erin) Berger, Uncle, John Hindle, and godparents, Vince and Sandy Gallegos. Mark is survived by his special aunts; Masie Cheng, Melissa McDonald, and Emily Tinley. Mark is also survived by his beloved pets–his aquarium of angelfish and mollies, his Pusheen cat family, and his dogs, Nola and Rex.
Mark graduated from Greentree Elementary, Creekwood Middle School, and was a student at Kingwood Park High School in Kingwood, Texas. Mark was an accomplished violinist with the Creekwood Orchestra, was self-taught in Mandarin Chinese. Mark will be remembered for his courage and perseverance, perhaps most importantly his optimism. Despite many hospitalizations and illnesses Mark always maintained straight As in school and planned for a career in math. He never let his illness deter his curiosity and love of learning. Despite his young age, Mark loved to discuss world affairs, politics, and had a keen interest in the world around him.
His family would also like to remember his "medical family". Mark underwent a bone marrow transplant earlier this year at Cincinnati Children's Hospital under the care of Drs. Stefanie Benoit, Stella Davies, Michael Jordan, Charles Spears and Mfon Umoren, along with the BMT team of nurses and therapists. Mark also received treatment for many years at Texas Children's Hospital under the care of Drs. Carl Allen, Lisa Forbes, and Jackie Kuna, RN. His medical team worked tirelessly to solve the mystery of his rare immune disorder, which had afflicted Mark since the age of 16 months.
A funeral mass and burial will be held at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Anderson, Texas at 10AM Tuesday October 20,2020. Mark requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations to kingwoodkindness.org or the Immune Deficiency Foundation at primaryimmune.org.
